Time for Inside CI to hit the road again, of course, to visit some outstanding integrators. This time, we travelled to Brentwood in Essex to meet Sound Advice. Established in 1994, the company has grown from high-end hi-fi to full systems integrator - with a peerless approach to design aesthetics. “We began by providing high quality audio systems for consumers who didn’t want large speakers or boxes of equipment on show,” explains Director Tony Sackett. “We now supply fully integrated smart home solutions. These systems have become incredibly sophisticated.” Arriving at the show room, visitors are presented with an entrance and impressive stairway made from oak which takes you up to the demo facility. I must say this is one of the largest independent showrooms we have visited. It includes two cinema rooms, with Dolby Atmos and the amazing Sony VPL-VW5000ES, a cinema-grade display solution which uses a laser light engine and a performance that reflects the company’s dominance in the commercial cinema projection market. The cinemas are equipped with a plush range of seating, with each room showing off a different range. The rooms have been fully treated with acoustic panels. The attention to detail is very impressive, with lighting effects dramatically washing walls in different colours at the press of a button. Moving through the building, we come across a meeting room that has two large racks full of AV kit on show. These power the two cinemas. There are numerous pieces of free standing furniture on display, showcasing the massive range of bespoke furniture available. All the joinery work is manufactured on site, in a 12,000 ft workshop that house some of the latest CNC machines. <img width="660" height="492" src="/media/1805251/8f3a2712_660x492.jpg" alt="8F3A2712 (1)"/> <img width="660" height="440" src="/media/1805252/8f3a2710_660x440.jpg" alt="8F3A2710 (1)"/> Next to this are two rooms kitted out to resemble a real world lounge and living room area. Once again, all kit is hidden. Even the subwoofers are out of sight, with slits in the bottom of the plinths the only evidence that they are there. All very impressive. Furniture is clearly a large part of Sound Advice’s business, so we quizzed Sackett to find out more. “We took a no compromise approach in designing our truly unique range of cabinets. This has enabled us to produce stunning looking furniture, capable of delivering high-end sound quality. They will quite simply take your breath away,” he says. The design work here is outstanding. “Our goal also extended to hiding all the speaker components within the cabinet, long gone are the days of ugly black boxes and cables all over your home. Another industry first, is that we made sure all the electronics hidden within the cabinet, can run at optimum performance through our forced air ventilation. As a final touch, we’ve ensured remote control is a breeze for all the family, via concealed infa-red modules.” As well as interior design and furniture manufacturing, Sound Advice offers home automation solutions from the likes of Crestron and Control4, with 24/7 IT support to allow the client to have total piece of mind. Looking around the showroom, you can tell that the business is driven by design, offering the client a complete bespoke service from start to finish. In addition to multi-room touch-screen control over audio and video in 19 rooms, this text-book custom installation offers robust high quality, high-speed Wi-Fi access throughout home and garden areas, and the provision of future upgrade potential through an ultra-high bandwidth fibre cable backbone running alongside the structured wiring to all TV points and to a garden data hub. Every detail of the interior design at this family home was carefully planned by the owners who are professional interior designers. The new build took a couple of years to be developed, but the AV integration was speedily done by ProInstall AV in just four months. “This is an extensive premium quality custom installation in a very large luxury property which has been designed to a high architectural standard within a large garden setting” said Installer Sajid Qureshi of Pro Install AV Ltd. “We worked with the owners to create an AV installation that was architecturally and aesthetically in tune with their design objectives. The brief for high performance audio, video and control inside and outside the home, and in sympathy with décor, gave us the opportunity to showcase all of our custom installation skills. It included the provision for robust and fast Wi-Fi access and control, and on our recommendation, the installation of a fibre network to future-proof data capacity. “We partnered with Habitech to supply the cable and Wi-Fi access infrastructure, all the speakers for interior and exterior areas, and also all the equipment for a media room cinema, which needed the versatility to operate as a living space as well as a high performance home theatre. They worked with us to develop the specification for the project, coordinating the supply of product at each stage of the build in order to satisfy performance targets and deadlines. Their close support included key product demonstrations and the supply of a virtual Wi-Fi heat map, which proved invaluable to winning customer approval,” added Qureshi. The owners had a clear objective placing technology at the core of the project, but not in your face. For instance the high quality audio had to be discreet throughout the property and gardens. Pro Install AV chose 30 pairs Sonance Visual Performance VP66R for the bedroom, lounge, hallway and pool areas. The exterior comprises three garden zones, each installed with Sonance Sonarray systems. Choosing Sonance for all speaker duties provides consistent high quality audio performance and voicing throughout the property. VP66R is a small, high quality 6.5-inch architectural speaker with innate versatility, producing dynamic, detailed coverage from discreet in-wall and ceiling positions. Pivoting dual tweeters optimise HF sound in single stereo and ambient roles while a choice of round or square grilles aids aesthetic integration. Its high audio capabilities make it perfect for super-discreet music reproduction. The SonArray system comprises eight small horn-shaped satellites and an 8-inch dual voice-coil underground subwoofer. SonArray is capable of detailed, evenly distributed audio in outdoor spaces up to 185 sqm, and presents an easy 8ohm load for any standard amplifier. It installs in a simple daisy-chain configuration, with the subwoofer connected to both channels. The bijou Sonarray SR1 speakers, which incorporate 3.5” (89mm) anodised aluminium cones, are discreet enough to be located under plants or foliage – they’re just 4” in diameter - so the system won’t compromise garden design. Facing inwards from the perimeter and directed by the satellites’ horn-shaped enclosures, the SR1’s superior sonic performance is less likely to spill into adjacent gardens. For entertainment, the homeowner wanted a discreet home cinema that could also be used as a media space within a large lounge/bar area approximately 300 sq m in size. For the audio, a 7.2 Dolby Atmos cinema sound system was installed, featuring three Sonance Cinema Series LCR2 in-wall speakers behind the screen, four Sonance VP86S in-ceiling surround speakers and two VPSUB10-NC in-wall subwoofers behind the screen, powered by a dedicated Sonance DSP 2-150 Digital Amplifier The main amplification is through a Yamaha RX-A3060, 11.2ch, Dolby Atmos/DTS:X AV receiver, compatible with Ultra Blu-ray 4K/60P, 4:4:4, HDCP2.2 and HDR. The projection screen is a 3m custom-made Projecta Tensioned Descender Electrol in RAL 7021 (satin). For perfect concealment the screen has a custom-painted black casing to match the cabinet in the room. Projection is provided by a JVC X9000R 4K projector on a lift that descends from the ceiling when the AV system is activated. The high performance sound system is near-invisible, generating high SPL to reproduce excellent home theatre audio dynamics and yet be unobtrusive at all other times. Front LCR2 speakers are sophisticated fully enclosed and slender 3-way full range designs featuring a coaxially mounted midrange/tweeter and quad woofers, rivalling the performance of a high quality floor standing speaker but from super-discreet in-wall positions. They’re joined by Sonance 10-inch in-wall subs with slim (85.7mm deep) dedicated backboxes to prevent bass frequencies from reaching adjoining rooms. Atmos surround channels are reproduced by full-range 3-way Sonance VP86S ceiling speakers. All speakers share similar Sonance voicing for sound field and quality and consistency while their micro trim grilles aid room integration. Robust and reliable Wi Fi access throughout the home and garden was another design objective satisfied by a Ruckus 802.11ac system comprising a ZoneDirector 1200 controller; R500 Access Points (x 7) and T300 Outdoor Access Points (x2). “Ruckus technology has a proven record in providing peerless Wi-Fi performance in every demand scenario, applying peerless flexibility and bullet-proof reliability to extract unmatched capacity and reliability from 802.11 standards,” comments Qureshi. The Ruckus ZoneDirector is widely-considered the most simple and straightforward centralised WLAN software solution there is. It uses a highly-intuitive Web user interface to make configuration and administration of the entire WLAN a breeze. The Ruckus ZoneFlex R500 delivers high-performance and reliable 802.11ac wireless networking. Its patented BeamFlex adaptive antenna technology and ChannelFly dynamic channel management deliver up to 2x increase in Wi-Fi signal coverage while minimising the number of APs required to service any area. Designed for easy installation in dense urban environments the ZoneFlex T300 Series dual-band 802.11ac outdoor access points are equipped with BeamFlex+ Smart Antenna Technology to provide reliable client connections and to increase network capacity while implicitly mitigating interference. Running alongside the copper backbone of superior, shielded SCP CAT6A cable is a network of Cleerline SSF fibre to all TV points and to a data cab in the garden. As Qureshi explains: “We pulling fibre alongside copper infrastructure as a way to future-proof data capacity. When HDMI 2.1 gets integrated and 8K arrives, fibre is available to handle the payload. It transfers more data, in less time, over longer distances than copper, doesn’t degrade like copper, requires little maintenance and has huge and versatile capacity. Across its operating band fibre loses a fraction of its signal strength over 100m, while copper can lose up to 94% over the same distance. Fibre is not susceptible to EMI/RFI interference or acts of God like a lightning strike, and by being much lighter but stronger than steel, can safely be pulled at eight times the tension limits of a CAT cable. The property, which was purpose-built to replace an old barn in the grounds of a family home, required a comprehensive AV overhaul. The original barn was demolished and re-built within the same footprint, offering plenty of technology opportunities. One early challenge that had to be surmounted by Halcyon came when linking the building to the house, as it required them to run very long cables between the two buildings. The main TV, Wi-Fi and network distributions are located in the house, so maintaining a high quality signal was vital. “The brief from the homeowner was to provide a stylish yet discrete home cinema, which was equally suited to watching films and listening to music,” explains Director Tim Dyer. “During the early stages of specifying the equipment, the client asked for a demonstration of what could be achieved. I got in touch with AWE as they had just finished the cinema room at the head office. We both went for a full demonstration of Dolby Atmos and knew it was the perfect system for the job.” The owner of the property adds: “We had advice from Tim initially as to what system would work well. But really it was when we went down to the AWE showroom, and heard all that the system could do, then we thought wow, it’s fantastic and it would be perfect for us. The building has been designed with AWE-supplied technology at its heart. The home cinema is fully insulated and features sound proof screens and blinds, allowing the immersive sound produced by the KEF speakers to be contained within the building. KEF Ci3160 speakers were installed around the 65-inch Panasonic AX802 4K screen, with KEF Ci160QR speakers installed into the ceilin “We specified KEF for a number of reasons” continues Tim. “The client was keen to keep as many speakers as possible in-wall, and I don’t think there is a product that is as good as the KEF offering currently on the market. The customer has been really impressed with the sound.” Providing amplifaction and decoding is a Marantz SR7009 AV receiver, for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and a Marantz UD5007 Blu-ray player. The speaker configuration is 11.2. To ensure the cinema room is easy to use by the whole family, Halcyon AV opted for a URC MX1200i touchscreen remote control. “The room has different uses for all of the family” explains the homeowner. “I love using the room to listen to music through the sound system. But the whole family has been using the room as a home cinema – we all watched the final of The Great British Bake Off in here.”This is one of the larger Dolby Atmos installations that Halcyon AV has done, and the results have been outstanding. Christopher’s hospice, part of the Shooting Star Chase group, specialises in providing support for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions. The staff at the hospice support families from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement, with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care. Following an introduction to Christopher’s by Stuart Tickle at AWE in July 2014, Ian Morrish, founder of Together for Cinema, contacted the charity. At the time, it wasn’t viable to go ahead with the installation. However, fast forward to October 2015, and Ian was given the go-ahead to provide an ambitious, multi-purpose cinema room. Having previously shown interest in getting involved with the scheme and living fairly local to the hospice, Gary Lewis from Cornflake agreed to be the installer for this project. In April, Cornflake visited the hospice with a lighting designer and a local contact from Philips Lighting in Guildford. At this meeting, the team drew up a required cinema product list, a lighting brief and a plan to secure automated blinds. At this planning stage, Cornflake was presented with its first challenge – the layout of the room. “It was obvious from our first visit that there were numerous challenges with the room chosen for the installation; namely where we could hang a projector with such a vaulted ceiling,” Gary Lewis, Cornflake. “The solution that was opted for was a short throw projector on an arm mounted above the electric drop-down screen. It was also apparent that the room would be in use throughout the day, which posed another challenge; the windows. It was a must that automated blinds be installed to ensure easy operation of the system.” The install began in July 2016 with premium products kindly donated by Crestron, Middle Atlantic (via RGB Communications), Monitor Audio, NAD, Projector Point, Wyrestorm and Habitech. The specialist Panasonic short throw projector, and other supporting products, were provided via Cornflake. A Philips Hue lighting system, installed by Future Light Design to feature wireless control, now provides the illumination and accessibility required for the room. Its infinite colour palate generates excitement and stimulation to the children who use the room, with configurations set for a party or cinema activity. The Velux windows now feature fully motorised blinds with a control panel by the door. The side windows also feature automatic blinds, kindly donated by QMotion and installed by ACE Contracts. The result is a smart, intuitive and comfortable environment for the children, young adults, families and staff members to enjoy for many years to come. In December 2016, The Garden Room cinema officially opened. “From the moment the Garden Cinema Room was officially launched, the children immediately began using it,” commented Geraldine Sheedy, Head of Care and Jane Magowan, Estates Manager, Christopher’s. “The Garden Room has always had many uses, but with the addition of the multi-coloured remote blackout blinds, impressive surround sound and the stunning Hue Lighting, it means that the sensory effects we are now able to create, will add a whole new dimension to the important experiences we can give the children and young people. Our Teenage Youth Group can’t wait for their first movie night and the Tweenies Group is looking forward to using our Magic Carpet equipment in a much larger and darker space where they can all join in the fun! We are also planning to hold a monthly ‘Movie Night’ for the staff. The team here at Christopher’s are very excited to learn all about our wonderful new cinema and lighting system, which will bring many hours, days and years of enjoyment creating many special, long lasting memories for the children, young people and families who visit Christopher’s. By combining a complete AV installation with lighting and heating control, the classic property is now advanced and stylish. The project is an oak frame building and the client wanted to incorporate the latest technology into their home to look after their audio visual needs as well as controlling the lighting and heating. The client brief demanded the latest technology was required to provide entertainment, security and comfort. Involved from the construction phase of the property, Just Add Popcorn was able to install a wired infrastructure to provide a stable network. As well as providing ample connectivity, this also allows for future expansion of the network. The AWE-supplied technology is impressively subtle within the property, designed to maximise entertainment without detracting attention from the home’s unique oak frame interior. <img width="659" height="220" src="/media/2207923/screen-shot-2018-02-16-at-184524_659x220.jpg" alt="Screen Shot 2018-02-16 At 18.45.24 (1)"/> Stuart Burgess, Managing Director at Just Add Popcorn, comments: “We started the project by meeting the client at AWE’s Show Apartment in Epsom. Here, we talked through and were able to demonstrate some of the options available. This proved to be a fantastic starting point.” After the meeting initial ideas for the project were drawn up to give the client an indication of the solutions possible and the benefits of including them in the project. Deciding on the final system proved straightforward, with the client having benefitted from experiencing the solutions at the AWE Show Apartment. The backbone of the project is a URC Total Control system. Bringing together functionality and style, the system allows for multiple controllers to be condensed into one handheld controller. For convenience, further controllers are also situated in key rooms. With the URC system as a base, two HEOS by Denon pre-amps were added to a URC DMS-1200 multiroom amplifier. This provides the client with easy access to their personal music library, as well as steaming services such as Spotify, Tidal and Internet Radio throughout the house. Audio from the Televisions is also introduced into the DMS to greatly improve the sound in the rooms containing TVs. <img width="660" height="757" src="/media/2207924/just-add-popcorn-5.jpg" alt="Just Add Popcorn 5 (1)"/> For the times when the client is at home relaxing, a subtle yet powerful surround sound set up was required. In the main living area, a 55-inch Samsung UHD TV screen was installed behind a specially made mirrored screen. This allows the UHD TV to completely disappear from view when not in use. Continuing the discreet theme to the property, five KEF Ci160QR in-ceiling speakers and a floor standing KEF T2 Subwoofer were installed to achieve a complete 5.1 surround sound system. The switching of the sources and the amplification supplied to the speakers is controlled via a Marantz AV receiver. A Philips Dynalite system provides effortless control over the lighting. The stylish Antumbra displays perfectly suits the sleek interior around the home, and all of the keypads are programmed to control any circuit of lights throughout the property. This allows the client to implement creative lighting scenes and simulated occupancy. The Antumbra on-wall displays feature an in-built temperature sensor, providing simple integration with the under floor heating system throughout the property. By utilising the same displays for the lighting and heating system, the controls in each room are kept to a minimum, avoiding the dreaded wall acne. Both the lighting and heating solutions are integrated in the URC system, which allows the homeowner to control these functions via the URC controllers.
