Sony has introduced Crystal LED Verona, a new range of Virtual Production focused LED displays. Headline attributes are deeper black levels and less reflectivity, plus easier, flexible installation for production crews

There are four new Crystal LED displays in the Verona range. The ZRD-VP15EB/23EB and ZRD-VP15EM/23EM, are available in P1.56mm and P2.31mm pixel pitch.

Newly developed Deep Black and Anti-Reflection Surface Technology delivers both deep black image expression and a low-reflection performance said to greatly reduces contrast loss caused by light from adjacent LED displays and studio lighting equipment.

We’re told the technology significantly reduces the difference in contrast between the image projected on the LED display and the actors performing in front of it on set, resulting in a more naturalistic blending of virtuality and reality. This also helps cut the cost required for post-shooting adjustments, says Sony.

In addition to filmmaking, TV and commercials, Sony Virtual Production technology is also gaining a foothold in live and corporate spaces.

The new Verona screens achieve a high brightness of 1,500 cd/m2 and wide colour gamut covering more than 97 per cent of DCI-P3. Key to the panel’s performance are new LED driver ICs, which enable high refresh rated up to 7,680Hz. This drastically reduces scanline artefacts on the camera.

From a practical point of view, the new Verona also boasts a new 1:1 cabinet, to help production crews more easily assemble a display that matches any given stage size, with large easy grip handles, locating pins for easy alignment and a lever-type locking mechanism that can be operated without tools. These new cabinets allow screens to be stacked up to 7 metres high.

Control compatibility is wide. The ZRD-VP15EB/23EB works with Brompton Technology’s Tessera SX40, the ZRD-VP15EM/23EM works with Megapixel's HELIOS Processing Platform.

The roll out of Verona follows the announcement of a new Virtual Production Tool Set from Sony, designed to tackle common problems with virtual production and to support In-Camera VFX. The Virtual Production Tool Set consist of the Camera and Display Plugin and colour calibrator, which uses Unreal Engine to connect real and virtual worlds.
