LG is promising major upgrades across its QNED LED TV and Mini LED models, for 2024. Making their debut at CES, the new lineup includes an ultra-large 98-inch model with advanced AI-powered processing technologies, plus extensive personalisation features.
Screens will also be available in 43-, 50-, 55-, 65-, 75-, and 86-inch screens.
Processor updates will see the incoming 8k QNED99T land with a new Alpha 9 AI processor, while the majority of its 4k stablemates will utilise the Alpha 8 AI Processor, said to offer a 1.3-fold increase in AI performance, a 2.3-fold enhancement in graphic performance, and a processing speed some 1.6 times faster than its predecessor.
Image innovations include AI Picture Pro based on deep learning. Able to distinguish faces, objects, and backgrounds within a scene, this feature improves the texture and fine detail reproduction. We’re told Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro, which splits the picture into blocks and analyses each in real-time to detect the darkest and brightest areas, should ensure precise HDR optimisation.
A Personalized Picture Wizard will also allow viewers to further customise the image quality comparing images.
The new processors also open the door to a sonic uplift, with AI Sound Pro used to create a virtual 9.1.2 surround soundstage. This can be enhanced further utilising WOW Orchestra, tin which compatible LG soundbars are harmonised with the set’s built-in speakers.
LG QNED Mini LED TVs can also take advantage of Precision Dimming technology to better manage gradations and backlight control. The QNED90 is able to differentiate shades of grey with 20-bit accuracy. LG dubs this Million Grey Scale shading.
Design is also a strong point. The QNED85 and QNED80 (up to 65-inches) utilise a Super-Slim Design just 29.7mm deep, while the larger 75- and 86-inch screens are 30.9mm thin.
LG is also giving its webOS smart platform a facelift in 2024, with improved personalisation. Users will be able create individual profiles to tailor their viewing experience, while the main home UI screen of the new webOS features Dynamic Q Cards for faster access to services. These can also be organised into groups, such as Home Office, Home Hub, Sports and Games.
There will also be support Apple AirPlay and Chromecast.
Interestingly, the brand is pledging to provide updates to webOS on its 2024 models for the next five years. The brand says this future-proofing will also apply to LG QNED Mini LED 8k models launched in 2022 (QNED99 and QNED95 series).
So how does the line break down for integrators?
The 8k QNED99 will be available in 75- and 86-inch screen sizes, and will feature a Gallery design, optimised for wall-hanging, while the QNED90 will ship in 65-, 75- and 86-inch screen sizes.
The QNED85 will come in 98-, 86-, 75- 65-, 55- and 50-inch screen sizes.
All the aforementioned are 120Hz screens and support 4k 120Hz sources.
There will also be a line of cheaper 60Hz models, designated QNED80T. These will be available in 86-, 75-, 65-, 55-, 50- and 43-inch screen sizes, and will use an Alpha 5 AI processor.
Price and availability are yet to be announced.
