Dolby Vision for gaming is here, rolling out initially to the Xbox Insider Alpha ring, before its main consumer deployment.
The Xbox Series X and S are the first consoles to support gaming in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, promising a new level of immersive gameplay.
So what exactly does Dolby Vision bring to games?
According to the company: ‘Dolby Vision lets gamers see more of their favorite games while leveling up gameplay with brighter highlights, sharper contrast, and more vibrant colors. Epic worlds, such as lush rainforests, desolate war zones, or neon futuristic cities, are brought to life in more colour. Dolby Vision can make it easier to see opponents hiding in the shadows and spot hidden clues through expanded contrast and better clarity in both light and dark scenes. And because Dolby Vision games automatically map to any display with Dolby Vision, you’re always seeing the best possible picture available.’
Purely from a practical point of view, it means no more sliders to adjust picture settings.
Xbox Series X|S will also support a new enhancement created by Dolby and Microsoft for HDR gaming content that enables a more accurate HDR gaming experience when connected to a Dolby Vision-enabled TV. News on which games will feature Dolby Vision is top come.
Currently, Dolby and Microsoft are working with TV manufacturers to make the Dolby Vision gaming experience seamless and automatic. To unlock the best gaming experience in Dolby Vision, Alpha Insiders will need to update their TV to its latest firmware to take full advantage of Dolby Vision along with other next-gen gaming features like automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) or variable refresh rate (VRR).
