Can a power transformer significantly upgrade an AV system’s performance? Specialist outfit Torus Power, which has introduced the latest in its TOT series of toroidal isolation transformers to the UK, says emphatically yes. The TOT AVR provides three power outlets which isolate components from an external power grid, using a Plitron-designed low noise toroidal isolation transformer. The new unit adds Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) to the TOT feature set. Distribution is via Karma-AV.
Automatic Voltage Regulation technology seeks to counter voltage drops and power line surges by providing stable voltage within a +/- 10V threshold. The unit can detect and compensates for abnormally high or low voltage to ensure that the voltage that powers equipment remains at an optimal level.
The component also promises to eliminate electrical noise pollution from appliances, dimmers, motors and lights. Torus Power maintains that fed a cleaner power source, audio has “a lower noise floor, better dynamics, imaging and bass, while video is enhanced with brighter colours and deeper blacks.”
Surge suppression absorbs voltage tides exceeding 2V above peak nominal line voltage; there’s also lighting strike protection. The Torus Power TOT AVR retails for £2000. Both shelf and rack mount configurations are available.
