Speaker specialist SVS has announced the Ultra Series Bookshelf range. Drawing heavily from the brand's highly regarded Ultra Tower floorstanders, the new loudspeakers sport their siblings distinctive wedge-shaped front baffle and flush-mounted SVS drivers. The company, which won Best Home Cinema Room at Sound & Vision The Bristol Show earlier this year, says that it's engineered the two-way monitor, through a combination of premium cabinetry and crossover optimization, "to fill small to medium-sized rooms with an encompassing, coherent soundstage; deep, dynamic bass; and sparkling mid and high-frequency details."

Hyperbole aside, the enclosure features a 6.5-inch composite glass-fibre cone woofer and SVS' SoundMatch two-way crossover network. Premium-grade capacitors, air-core inductors and heavy-trace printed circuit boards are used to ensure the purest signal transmission, says the brand. The speakers are available in either piano gloss black and real black oak veneer, and have a rated bandwidth of 45 Hz - 32kHz (+/- 3 dB).

"Listening with eyes closed, it's easy to convince yourself the sound produced by the Ultra Bookshelf is coming from a speaker twice the size and price," enthuses SVS president Gary Yacoubian, adding that for the price the boxes deliver "a pretty phenomenal audio experience."

UK distributor Karma-AV says it expects to begin shipping the new models in April, for a retail price of £1,099 a pair.
