Samsung will launch a curved OLED TV in the UK on September 5. The 55-inch S9C will offer "a completely immersive and spectacular viewing experience," says the brand. The curved screen will also feature twin-tuners with Multi View, allowing two completely different full-screen Full-HD content channels to be viewed simultaneously, even in 3D, via Samsung's 3D Active glasses.
Head of TV and AV for Samsung UK and Ireland Guy Kinnell declared the display "a groundbreaking step in picture technology," noting: "It's great to be able to finally reveal Samsung's Curved OLED TV for our UK and Irish customers. It represents an amazing statement in design, vibrant and energetic entertainment experiences."
Both Samsung and rival OLED producer LG have seized on the curved panel design as a point of difference between OLED and established LED and plasma technologies. It's hoped that the additional 'wow' factor of the unusual form factor will help popularise the notoriously difficult to mass produce screen technology. For custom installers, the arrival of curved displays would not appear to be particularly good news, as the profile does not lend itself to wall-mounting.
The S9C will also offer Samsung's Smart Hub interface, with a full complement of catch-up TV services and internet delivered VoD. The set also features the brand's S Recommendation content engine. As with Samsung's high-end LED LCD screens, the panel also supports the Smart Evolution upgrade kit, which allows the CPU of the TV to be upgraded over time.
The S9C is expected to retail for a toe-curling £7,999. Samsung screens are distributed in the CI channel by AWE Europe and Invision UK.
