Scandinavian Design meets Hi-Fi integration

Nordic hi-fi specialist Primare has introduced a high-end hi-fi system with CI functionality.

Its newly released 20 Series comprises the brand's I22 stereo amplifier and CD22 disc spinner. Available in either black or titanium, both units feature RS232, IR and 12v triggers, opening the door for some interesting home automation integration.

The pair appear nicely matched: power-up, display brightness and control are all synchronised when the units are connected. A single system remote control does double duty. Audio quality should be exceptional. The pair have optimised signal paths, high quality power supplies and matching heavy gauge steel bodywork. Audio inputs on the amp can also be re-named (up to 6 characters).

The I22 is a 2 x 80 watt design utilising two Ultra Fast Power Device (UFPD) power modules. Primare says this is key reason why it runs cooler than conventional Class A/B products. The standby mode is quoted at just 0.3 W. There's also an optional DAC upgrade board (purchased separately this is £450). Aimed at PC audio enthusiasts, it adds USB-B, coaxial and optical digital inputs for streaming music sources.

While the CD22 player may look conventional, it does read MP3 and WMA music files from USB or disc. Audiophiles will appreciate the option of selectable upsampling (48 kHz, 96 kHz or 192kHz) and the inclusion of a Burr-Brown PCM1792 DAC. Other niceties include a five second buffer memory to maximize jitter suppression and protect from mechanical shock.

With the DAC upgrade, the 122 amp retails for £1590 (without the DAC it's £1250). The CD22 player is listed at £1250.
