Philips Dynalite has launched a customisable Smart faceplate that brings modernistic cool to lighting and home automation control. Antumbra, distributed in the UK by AWE, does away with traditional hard buttons and replaces them with a panel that sports multiple control points and functionality. Philips believes the concept could fundamentally change the relationship between people and hardware controls.
Unlike traditional on-wall keypads, the Antumbra (named after the lighting effect that creates the bright ring seen during an eclipse) only activates when a user is detected nearby. It wakes from a resting state with a wall wash lighting effect, camouflaged button indicators lighting up. When the user moves away, the faceplate illuminations fade away. Three different button finishes are available (magnesium, white and silver), along with a variety of rims. Buttons can be individually labeled to describe their functionality, with either text or graphic icons. An online tool allows integrators to preview what any given panel design will look like.
Craig Thorne, product manager at AWE, describes Antumbra as a completely unique yet intuitive alternative to the traditional keypad. "The Philips Dynalite brand continues to show high degrees of innovation, rarely seen with other lighting control manufacturers," he says. "This makes the system an attractive proposition for the dealer who wants to wow their client."
