Topping has introduced the D900, a new flagship DAC and preamplifier designed to push the performance ceiling for sub-£2,000 digital audio systems.
The D900 sits at the top of Topping’s range, following the recent release of the DX5 II. While many DACs rely on off-the-shelf converter chips or resistor-ladder designs, the D900 takes a different path. It employs a proprietary 1-bit decoding architecture known as PSRM, short for Precision Stream Reconstruction Matrix. This discrete system is engineered to maximise accuracy, reduce noise, and maintain signal integrity throughout the digital-to-analogue conversion chain.
Topping first trialled PSRM in its D90 III Discrete DAC in 2024, but the D900 introduces an expanded and refined version, doubling the number of decoding elements and further optimising component selection and clocking accuracy.
At the core of the D900 is its discrete 1-bit module. By converting each digital sample into an extremely fast stream of single-bit pulses, then shaping and smoothing the output through an analogue reconstruction filter, the system is able to achieve exceptionally low noise and distortion levels, says the manufacturer. Harmonic distortion is quoted below –140dB, while signal-to-noise ratio reaches 131dB.
A newly engineered voltage-reference power supply underpins this performance, designed to remain stable under the nanosecond-level demands of the switching logic. Timing stability is further strengthened by a dedicated CPLD-based clock management system, which suppresses jitter across all digital inputs.
Topping has also introduced a new I/V conversion stage built from a mix of low-distortion op-amps and discrete components. This allows the analogue output to retain the full benefits of the PSRM process, supporting wide dynamic range and clean transient response.
For integration into custom installations, the D900 offers a comprehensive set of digital inputs: dual USB, four digital optical audio inputs, AES/EBU, and IIS-LVDS over HDMI. PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512 are supported over USB and IIS-LVDS, with lower-rate compatibility across the remaining inputs. Bluetooth 5.1 is also included, with support for LDAC, aptX Adaptive and other modern codecs.
The analogue stage is fully balanced from input to output, with two sets of XLR connectors, one fixed level and one variable. An internal, discrete analogue preamplifier enables direct connection to power amplifiers or active loudspeakers, while an 18-relay volume control provides precise 0.5dB steps. Installers can configure the unit via its Aurora UI, a two-inch colour display offering selectable metering and user-customisable layouts.
Topping includes support for PEQ processing through its free ‘Topping Tune’ software, allowing installers to create correction curves or system presets, upload them to the unit, and switch them on the fly without a computer attached.
The chassis itself is engineered for noise control. A 3mm aluminium body, 8mm front panel, and vibration-damping feet help limit resonance, electromagnetic interference, and mechanical noise—qualities valued in both high-end residential and dedicated AV spaces. A metal remote, machined from a single aluminium block, rounds out the hardware package.
The Topping D900 retails for £1,799. Distribution is via Electromod.
