THX has moved into the Spatial Audio field, partnering with streaming service Qobuz, to release new 24-bit tracks mastered in the format. Supporting artists at launch include Dinosaur Jr., Circuit Des Yeux, and Anat Cohen.

THX Spatial Audio for Music creates a 360° soundstage when listening through headphones. The technology is said to place the listener in the middle of their music, enhancing subtle details, and adding a live acoustic ambiance to the listening experience.

THX Spatial Audio for Music works with the Qobuz standard of 24-bit Hi-Res audio. It works with standard headphones, and no special hardware is required.

The Zombies’ ‘Whenever You’re Ready’ performed by Dinosaur Jr., Bauhaus’ ‘Double Dare’ by Circuit des Yeux and ‘Calling Vic Juris’ from Anat Cohen have all been recorded and mastered with the spatial audio experience in mind.

Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux said of recording ‘Double Dare’: “ My favourite part about the CdY interpretation of ‘Double Dare’ is the way Whitney (Johnson) represents the screeching guitar part with a viola and overdrive pedal. The way the harmonics and feedback bounce and resonate around in THX Spatial Audio feels like being in the eye of a tornado. If ‘Double Dare’ is an anecdote to fear, this cover in THX Spatial Audio ups the dosage.”

Anat Cohen recorded ‘Calling Vic Juris’ with Gilad Hekselman, a song that he wrote in honour of late jazz guitarist Vic Juris. “We recorded the song as an acoustic duo and then added layers of clarinet and guitar,” explained Cohen. “The THX Spatial Audio format amplifies the building momentum heard as the track progresses. With this audio format I could express the influences of both the acoustic and electric worlds we breathe.”

Dan Mackta, Managing Director of Qobuz USA, said: “The ease with which Qobuz users can experience the THX Spatial Audio for Music tracks, and the fact that it is available as lossless Hi-Res, mean the format compliments our platform perfectly. The artists that are providing these exclusive spatial mixes are eclectic, acclaimed and are a great fit for the Qobuz audience.”

Kasson Crooker, THX Spatial Audio engineer, said: “As an artist and an engineer, I am always interested in deepening the experiences music can evoke. THX Spatial Audio is a phenomenal immersive technology that we are thrilled to bring to these creative musicians, to support them in heightening their creativity and connection to their audiences.”
