Sony has expanded its ‘Cinema is Coming Home’ strategy with the launch of its first True RGB televisions, the flagship BRAVIA 9 II and the more accessible BRAVIA 7 II.

The models feature next generation RGB LED backlighting, coupled to Sony’s proprietary RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro technology, which independently controls red, green and blue LEDs. By precisely managing each primary colour light source, Sony says the new TVs achieve previously unseen colour volume, with reduced blooming, improved gradation and improved viewing from wide viewing angles, even in brighter living spaces.

According to Yoshihiro Ono, Head of Home Entertainment Business Unit at Sony Corporation, the technology builds on more than two decades of RGB backlight development, dating back to the company’s QUALIA displays, first seen in 2004.

“Our new True RGB represents a breakthrough that combines the precision of individually controlled RGB LEDs with the best aspects of both Mini LED and OLED, giving viewers purer colour, higher brightness, and picture accuracy that holds up in any room,” he says.

The BRAVIA 9 II features Sony’s most advanced implementation of the technology. Newly developed LED controllers provide granular backlight management, while RGB Triluminos Max and Luminance Booster Pro work together to increase brightness and colour purity. This flagship model also gains Immersive Black Screen Pro, a newly developed glare-resistant screen treatment intended to preserve black depth and shadow detail in brighter rooms.

Audio performance also differentiates the BRAVIA 9 II from its sibling. The flagship incorporates Acoustic Multi-Audio+ with up-firing beam tweeters to create a more expansive soundstage and improved positional accuracy. The BRAVIA 7 II retains the same core RGB architecture and cinema-focused processing, but without some of the premium enhancements found higher up the range.

Inside CI has had an early hands-on with both models, and can confirm picture quality from both models is exceptional, with the BRAVIA 9 II delivering class leading HDR peak brightness, and quite astonishing contrast.

Shared features across both ranges include Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced compatibility, alongside Sony’s Studio Calibrated modes for services including Netflix, Prime Video and Sony Pictures Core. Ambient Optimisation automatically adjusts picture and sound based on room conditions and viewing position, while the My Cinema mode prioritises film-first presentation. Both models also feature Voice Zoom 3 dialogue enhancement and Sony’s latest 3D Surround Upscaling processing.

From an installation perspective, Sony has clearly targeted premium living spaces and dedicated media rooms alike. The BRAVIA 9 II is available in 65-, 75-, 85- and 115-inch screen sizes, while the BRAVIA 7 II spans 50- through 98-inches. Both employ a slim industrial design with a textured bezel and discreet stand system intended to minimise visible cabling and integrate more cleanly into interior schemes.

Retail pricing for the BRAVIA 9 II starts at £3,499 for the 65-inch model and rises to £22,999 for the 115-inch version. The BRAVIA 7 II begins at £1,899 for the 50-inch screen, topping out at £6,999 for the 98-incher.
