Sonos has launched a new generation of wireless speakers, including a flagship model designed to work with Dolby Atmos sources. The Sonos Era 300 and Sonos Era 100 are rather different from what we’ve seen from the brand before.
The Era 300 has been built to deliver the best experience with Dolby Atmos music, and function as part of a home theatre system, while the Era 100 is a dramatic reinvention of its best-selling Sonos One.
Featuring Trueplay room EQ via the Sonos app, both have been tuned by ‘award-winning artists and engineers.’
The Era 300 adopts a striking hour-glass design, and employs six drivers that direct sound left, right, forward and upward. Two can be paired with the Sonos Arc or Beam (Gen 2) to create a fully immersive Dolby Atmos sound system.
“Just like the shift from mono to stereo, spatial audio is the next evolution in listening, creating a sound experience that wraps you in music”, said Giles Martin, VP, Sound Experience at Sonos. “As both creators and major streaming platforms embrace spatial audio for music, the time is right to create an out loud listening experience that delivers against the promise of this thrilling and creative format.”
The Era 100 is slightly larger than the Sonos One, and employs all-new hardware and software. Two angled tweeters present left and right for a stereo listening experience, while a larger midwoofer handles bass. Typical applications would see the Era 100 on bookshelves, desks or in kitchens.
Two Era 100 speakers can function as rears with a Sonos soundbar.
The Era 100 and Era 300 also herald a new UI, including a new capacitive volume slider, and use less energy and make use of recycled materials than their predecessors.
The Era 300 retails for £449, and Era 100 £249. They’re available globally on March 28.
In related news, Sonos has confirmed that it will also add support for spatial audio via Apple Music to the Arc, and Beam (Gen 2).
