Sky has launched a second generation Sky Glass TV that offers improved picture quality, retooled Dolby Atmos sound system, and sleeker design.

Operationally, the new Sky Glass is exactly the same as its predecessor, although Sky has now renamed its smart platform. No longer Sky Entertainment OS, it’s now just Sky OS. It’s a fully TV over IP solution, delivering the full Sky IP experience over Wi-Fi, no dish or cable required.

Sky has opted to use a Full Array QD-LED panel, rather than MiniLED for this second iteration, but claims the set is brighter than its predecessor with more local dimming zones. Certainly at first glance the picture is significantly more dynamic. It’s 4K HDR enabled with support for Dolby Vision.

There are three Sky Glass Gen 2 screen sizes to choose from, 43-, 55- and 65-inches, and the set comes in three updated colours, Volcanic Grey, Arctic Silver and Atlantic Blue. Aesthetic improvements include the fabric grille which is now colour matched to the rest of screen.

There are also improvements to viewing angle, holding colour and contrast more effectively when sat to the side. Sky has also expanded the picture preset choice, adding an Extra Vivid mode.

The panel itself remains 60Hz, so no 4K 120Hz gaming option. Connectivity comprises three HDMIs.

Much like the original, Sky Glass 2 features a 360° Dolby Atmos sound system, although this has had a bit of a redesign. It now has seven speakers (the original had six), including a dual subwoofer and up-firing height drivers.

Thankfully the stand has been simplified. Out goes the heavy metal iron work, and in comes a two prong slot in design, no tools required. The back of the set is now completely flat, for neater wall mounting. It is also compatible with standard VESA TV mounts.

Buyers still have the option to pay for the new Sky Glass like a mobile phone, either all in one go, or spread the cost with interest-free monthly payments, from £14 per month for the 43-inch, £19 a month for the 55-inch, or £24 a month for the 65-inch. There’s also the option of a 24-month TV subscription, or a 31-day rolling contract for more flexibility.
Various subscription packages are available.

At the launch of Sky Glass Gen 2, Sky also took the wraps off Sky Glass Air, which is due to go on sale toward later this year. An entry level Quantum Dot LED screen with global dimming, it lacks the Dolby Atmos soundbar, but offers the same Sky content experience.

It will come in a choice of three colours, Carbon Grey, Cotton White and Sea Green, and three sizes, 43”, 55” and 65”. Pricing to follow.
