Audio stylist Ruark Audio has released the R1S, a next-gen smart radio with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming built in. In addition to DAB, DAB+, FM and internet radio, there’s support for Spotify Connect, Amazon Music, and Deezer.
The R1S is the latest in a long line of acclaimed compact radios from the British Hi-Fi brand. Once again, design remains a strong point, with a mid-grey finish and hand-crafted composite wooden grille.
Tech has also had an upgrade. Ruark’s trademark RotoDial controller is joined by a new colour display. This TFT window shows time, alarm, and programme information, and on Wi-Fi sources, album, and station artwork, too. The light sensor automatically adjusts the screen to suit ambient light levels.
The Ruark can also be used with a new control app called Oktiv, which provides control of most R1S functions, including the SmartRadio tuner. The RotoDial can also be used to search for stations and podcasts.
The R1S utilises a dynamic class A-B linear amplifier with adaptive equalisation to suit all volume levels. A full-range neodymium NS+ driver sits in an optimised enclosure to provide an extended frequency response with a bass performance said to belie its compact dimensions.
Connectivity includes USB-C for MP3 playback and charging, a headphone output, and a switchable line input. Highly efficient Bluetooth 5.0 can remember up to six paired devices. While obviously domesticated, the 1.6kg R1S can be untethered from the mains with Ruark’s optional Backpack 3 rechargeable battery pack.
The R1S is available now, priced £299.
