Quad has unveiled the 3CDT, a dedicated CD transport designed to sit alongside its QUAD 3 integrated amplifier. The new disc spinner joins the company’s retro-styled 3 Series, a line that draws on the industrial design of Quad’s sixties preamps.
At the core of the unit is a precision CD mechanism paired with a custom servo control system. Quad has implemented a robust dual-processor architecture, combining a 32-bit RISC CPU with a dedicated MCU to manage the servo behaviour and error correction. This configuration aims to reduce read errors and jitter, ensuring the transport retrieves digital information reliably before handing it off to the connected DAC.
The internal power supply has also been designed with signal integrity in mind. A low-noise toroidal transformer supports isolated power domains, separating the laser and motor circuits from the decoder stage processing the audio stream. Feeding this section is an ultra-precision, temperature-controlled crystal oscillator on its own regulated supply, providing the master clock reference. Quad says this approach helps maintain timing accuracy, benefiting transient clarity, stereo imaging and overall coherence.
The aluminium chassis and shielded transport assembly are engineered to limit vibration and interference, both common sources of digital instability in disc replay. Every physical component, from the disc tray to the coaxial and optical digital outputs, has been built for long-term durability and quiet mechanical operation. The result is a transport intended to offer reliable performance over many years, with the ability to read moderately damaged discs that may be problematic for lesser mechanisms.
Format support extends beyond standard 16-bit/44.1kHz CDs to include CD-R, CD-RW and data discs containing WAV, FLAC, APE, MP3 and WMA files.
This flexibility, combined with its focused engineering, positions the 3CDT as a practical solution for clients with extensive CD libraries who want dependable playback within integrated audio systems.
The QUAD 3CDT CD transport will be available from mid-December, retailing at £599.
