Pro-Ject Audio Systems has launched the A1.2, a fully automatic turntable aimed at making premium vinyl playback more intuitive and accessible, without compromising on performance. Building on the success of the original A1, the A1.2 introduces a suite of upgrades that position it as the new entry point into the company’s AUTOMAT series.
The A1.2 replaces the outgoing A1 model. It retains the core ethos of its predecessor - plug-and-play convenience, dependable mechanics, and rich analogue sound - but introduces targeted refinements across its mechanical and acoustic systems.
Available in a new white finish alongside the classic black, the A1.2 is designed for vinyl enthusiasts who value both simplicity and fidelity. It arrives fully assembled and pre-calibrated, requiring just a few minutes of straightforward setup before it’s ready to spin.
At the heart of the A1.2’s upgrades is a new die-cast aluminium platter, replacing the stamped version used in the original A1. Combined with a refined drive system, the new platter helps reduce resonance and improve rotational stability. Pro-Ject has also introduced CNC machining into the platter manufacturing process, for tighter tolerances and consistent acoustic performance.
The A1.2’s 8.3-inch ultra-light aluminium tonearm has been retained but now features a redesigned headshell constructed from carbon fibre-reinforced polymer. This new material maintains the required low mass for automatic operation, while also increasing rigidity and resistance to external vibrations. The tonearm comes paired with a pre-installed and factory-aligned Pro-Ject Pick it MM E moving magnet cartridge, making the system genuinely plug-and-play.
A key point of differentiation is the A1.2’s fully mechanical operation. The automatic functions (start, stop, tonearm cueing and return) are managed entirely without motors or electronics in the arm assembly. This avoids potential signal interference, and once playback begins, the mechanism disengages completely. The benefit is said to be uncoloured, uninterrupted sound reproduction.
The resonance-damped wooden chassis is supported by silicon-damped feet for vibration control. The deck is handmade in a specialised German factory with decades of experience in automatic mechanisms, while final assembly is handled in the Czech Republic by long-serving Pro-Ject technicians.
Integrators should note that the set-up requires minimal user intervention: all counterweight, anti-skating, and cartridge alignment parameters are preset at the factory. Once unpacked and powered, users simply place a record, set the speed to 33 or 45 RPM, and press start. The tonearm lowers automatically and returns to rest once the record ends - all without the listener needing to lift a finger.
From a custom installer POV, the Pro-Ject A1.2 represents a compelling addition to the turntable market, particularly for clients seeking a balance between high-quality analogue playback and effortless operation. With robust engineering, tasteful aesthetics, and meaningful performance enhancements over the original A1, the A1.2 offers convenience and credibility.
The A1.2 retails for £469 (€499.00). Distribution in the UK and Ireland is by Henley Audio.
