PMC10 XBD brings studio‑grade monitoring to home cinema

PMC will debut its new PMC10 XBD main monitor system at CEDIA Expo, demonstrating how studio‑grade monitoring can be deployed directly in high‑end residential cinemas.

PMC’s presentation in Sound Room 6, created with US distributor Playback Custom, will mark the first public outing of the active PMC10 XBD system.

The installation is designed to show integrators how the same loudspeaker standards used for film scoring, mixing and post‑production can be applied to premium home theatres. The front stage will use three PMC10 XBD units for left, centre and right channels, supported by Ci140s for surrounds, Ci65s for height channels and six PMC15 SUBs for low‑frequency reinforcement.

The PMC10 XBD sits at the top of PMC’s current monitoring range.It’s a twin‑cabinet design built around two of the company’s latest 10‑inch bass drivers, working with an evolved ATL bass‑loading system and LaminairX airflow technology to deliver deep, controlled low‑frequency performance.

The midrange is handled by the newest version of PMC’s 3‑inch dome, which incorporates the proprietary a‑void absorber to eliminate rear‑wave reflections and maintain clarity. High frequencies come from a hand‑built 34 mm soft‑dome driver with a low‑distortion motor and shallow waveguide for extended, fatigue‑free listening.

Each PMC10 XBD loudspeaker is powered by its own dedicated master36 unit, an in‑house amplifier/DSP platform delivering 3,600 watts per speaker. The master36 provides 800 W to the tweeter, 800 W to the midrange dome and 1,000 W to each bass driver, with 32‑bit DSP crossover control ensuring precise management of every transducer. The PMC15 SUBs are driven by PMC’s power20 rack amplifiers, each supplying 2,000 W of Class‑D power. The full system is integrated through a StormAudio processor, forming a fully active LCR stage within a complete immersive layout.

The company’s monitors have been used in film scoring since the early 1990s, including work by Oscar‑winning engineer Shawn Murphy. PMC has even received an Emmy for its contribution to movie production. Playback Custom’s Rich Fairbrother says the CEDIA system will highlight how those same reference qualities can be delivered in residential cinema rooms.

PMC co‑CEO and head of design Oliver Thomas describes the PMC10 XBD as a new benchmark for home immersive audio. The aim is to give integrators and clients a clear sense of the scale, precision and realism achievable when studio‑grade monitoring is applied to domestic environments.

Demonstrations will run throughout CEDIA Expo. Grammy and Emmy‑winning engineer Tommy Vicari will present sessions at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm on September 3.
