Optoma has unveiled Photon Go, a compact Ultra Short Throw 1080p projector, and the first in its new Photon sub-brand of projection solutions. Launching April 2025, the compact UST model uses an RGB triple-laser light engine to cast a 100-inch image from just 25cm away from wall or screen. Pushed closer to a wall, it's relatively easy to obtain a 60-inch picture from the device.
The Photon Go’s RGB triple-laser system offers a wide colour gamut, with pronounced contrast. Brightness is quoted at 650 lumens. Typical applications would include media room use for watching live sports, gaming, or movies. The model made its debut at the Bristol Hi-Fi show, and Inside CI had an early look at it in action.
In a fully dark room, the Go impressed with its colour vibrancy and general brightness. While compatible with HDR10 sources, users shouldn't expect much in the way of traditional HDR peak brightness.
Speaking to Inside CI, Optoma suggested that additional Photon branded projectors could include a 4K Ultra Short Throw model, but added "not all Photon projectors will be Ultra Short Throw. Photon will become Optoma's main B2C projector brand."
The Photon Go has built-in Google TV, for easy access to popular streaming services, such as Netflix and YouTube. Wireless connectivity covers Wi-Fi 5, 6, and 7. The projector also has a 2x10W sound system built in, as well as Bluetooth connectivity.
Emphasising its portability, the projector also has a built-in battery, that offers one hour of playback at full brightness. It's possible to extend this towards 90 minutes by running on 80 per cent brightness.
Setup is quick and easy, with auto keystone and focus to aid setup.
The Optoma Photon Go will be available from April 2025, priced at £899 (€999).
