Canadian Hi-Fi specialist MOON has unveiled the North Collection, its most ambitious high-end music range to date - and it’s the best Hi-Fi audio we've heard this year.
The collection comprises the integrated Moon 641 amplifier and 681 network streamer and DAC; the MOON 791 Network player preamp and matching MOON 761 power amp; and the range topping (or should that be whopping) MOON 891 network player and 861 power amplifier.
The 641 integrated amp is rated at 125W per channel (into 8 ohms). The 761 power amp is rated at 200W p/c (into 8 ohms). The ‘ultimate’ 861 power amp packs a 300W p/c punch (into 8 ohms), and can also be used in a mono block configuration.
Streaming support covers Tidal, Qobuz, and Deezer. The network players are Roon Ready and AirPlay 2 compliant, with Spotify Connect, DSD and MQA compatibility.
Significantly, all the network player and preamps have an HDMI ARC input alongside regular analogue and digital inputs, increasing their appeal for media room applications. The 791 and 891 preamplifiers offer a phono stage for both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges.
The collection is a bold statement of intent from the Simaudio brand, firmly targetting the premium end of the audiophile market.
All three models are designed and manufactured in-house, at Moon' Base Montreal, and feature exceptional build quality and finish. The heavyweight separates boast contoured vertical heatsinks and a subtle update on classic MOON black and silver styling.
The new models also feature a range of proprietary new technologies. Core to the concept is the MOON Distortion Cancelling Amplifier (MDCA) circuit, said to reduce distortion and noise to inconsequential levels, and the MOON Damping Base (MDB) for superior mechanical isolation.
The line also features an updated volume control, and DACs tuned by the MOON Digital Engine (MDE). The units can be partnered using intelligent MOONLink connectivity, an RJ45 cable, for slick interoperability.
The company told Inside CI that all components will be operable via popular automation control platforms, for full system integration. However, those looking for something a little more tactile get the MOON BRM-1 Bluetooth remote control. This high-end smart controller features a luxurious volume knob, and intuitive touch controls with visual feedback via a small display, and is included with each system.
All three network players feature an OLED colour screen which displays artist names, track listings and album cover art, as well as full volume and setup menus.
Inside CI had an exclusive preview of the new range, specifically the 791 network player /preamp, and 761 power amp. This hugely impressive combo combines operatic drama with a grin-inducing musicality. This is high-end Hi-Fi that everyone can appreciate.
The 641 integrated amp is priced at £11,000 ($11,000 / €12,500), with the matching 681 network player/DAC at £12,000 ($12,000 / €13,500). The step-up 791 network player/preamplifier will sell for £16,000 ($16,000 / €18,500), while the 761 power amp sells for £14,000 ($14,000 / €16,000). The flagship 891 network player/preamplifier is priced at £25,000 ($25,000 / €28,500) and matching 861 power amp at £23,000 ($22,000 / €25,000).
The North Collection will make its public debut at High End Munich and will go on sale in October, with the aforementioned 7-series leading the way. Distribution is via Renaissance audio.
