McIntosh Labs has announced an upgradable DAC that it says will futureproof buyers against any upcoming changes in digital audio technology. The new MDA200 D/A Converter is based around McIntosh’s established DA2 Digital Audio Module, as seen in the brand’s flagship MA12000 integrated amplifier and C2700 and C53 Preamplifiers.

The module design has designed to be replaced by a newer digital audio module in the future, thereby ensuring the MDA200 D/A Converter will serve for many years to come.

Out of the box, the MDA200 supports high-resolution digital audio playback, with the USB input providing native DSD playback up to DSD512 and DXD to 384 kHz. Digital coax and optical inputs support up to 24-bit/192 kHz.

The MDA200 offers system builders seven digital audio inputs, comprising two coaxial, two optical, one USB, one MCT (to pair with McIntosh’s MCT series of SACD/CD Transports), plus an audio-only HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) for use with a TV.

Audiophile niceties include balanced and unbalanced analogue outputs, plus Roon Tested designation from Roon Labs.

Build quality is characteristically high, with classic McIntosh design elements, including an illuminated logo, rotary control knobs, custom machined aluminium end-caps and a black-glass faceplate.

UK retail price is £4,995. Distribution is via Fine Sounds.
