McIntosh has expanded its Ci-Fi (Custom Install Fidelity) portfolio with the two-channel MI502 digital amplifier.
Able to deliver 500 watts into 8 ohms, or 800 watts into 4 ohms, the MI502 is designed for custom install, Hi-Fi and home cinema systems.
Installation configurations are many. The MI502 can be used to power the front left and right speakers in a home theatre system or drive a pair of in-wall subwoofers. Two could drive the three front channels of a home cinema plus one subwoofer. Multiple MI502s could be configured for distributed home audio system. It might also be used to drive outdoor speakers.
The MI502 is rack-mountable with a 2U height. Class D amplification ensures the amp runs cool without recourse to fans. An on/off signal sensor that turns the unit off when no input signal has been detected for a set amount of time. It automatically turns the amplifier back on when it detects an input signal.
Connectivity includes a pair of balanced and unbalanced inputs to connect to preamplifiers, and a pair of McIntosh's standard five-way speaker binding posts. There’s also a 12-volt trigger.
Proprietary McIntosh technologies include Power Guard signal overload technology, to prevent overdriving speakers, and Sentry Monitor, a short-circuit protection circuit that disengages the output stage if the current exceeds safe operating levels. The amplifier uses closed-loop digital switching technology, which it says produces ‘groundbreaking’ performance levels for custom install audio.
Design is unmistakably McIntosh. The black-glass front panel features two blue McIntosh Watt Meters, with LED indicators relating the status of each channel.
The MI502 retails for £5,995. Distribution is via Fine Sounds UK.
