Lucid Motors has partnered with Dolby to launch the first in-car Dolby Atmos audio system. The technology has been integrated into the electric Lucid Air sedan. The announcement was made at SXSW.
The 21-speaker Surreal Sound system comprises front, rear, side, and height speakers, in order to allow the driver and passengers to feel the relative movement of individual sounds as they move around the cabin. The promise is of a fully immersive listening experience with Dolby Atmos music, and upscaled stereo sources.
The Surreal Sound system includes enhanced driver aids that feature directional acoustic signaling of notifications, warnings, and all other driver and passenger alerts.
Working with Dolby, the speaker system was tuned specifically for the Lucid Air, using the Capitol Records Studio C recording studio as the reference design.
Tim Pryde, Director of Music, Dolby Laboratories, describes Dolby Atmos music as one of the biggest paradigm shifts within the music community in the past 50 years.
“As a company, we are fully committed to bringing immersive audio to all the ways in which music is enjoyed. Automotive is a natural extension for the incredible experience of music in Dolby Atmos, and we are excited to bring this to the world with Lucid.”
Customer deliveries of the Lucid Air are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2021.
