LG Display went Meta at CES 2023, confirming more details about its third-generation OLED panels, which signify yet another a step up in image quality. Its latest panel feature Meta Technology, an umbrella term that covers both its new Micro lens Array technology and Meta Booster brightness enhancing algorithm.
OLED displays using META Technology can deliver 60 percent brighter images and offer 30 percent wider viewing angles than ‘conventional’ OLED displays, we’re told, as well as improved energy efficiency.
Meta builds on OLED EX technology, last year’s second-generation OLED panel technology that introduced deuterium and personalised algorithms to enhance brightness.
Meta Technology arrives in LG Display’s 10th anniversary year. At CES, the company held a celebratory birthday party for its OLED operation.
LG Display is claiming a 2,100-nit peak brightness for its Meta screens.
The key factor here is the all-new Micro Lens Array, a layer of micrometer-sized convex lenses that maximizes light emission from the OLED panel. This prevents light being reflected back into the panel and being lost, which capped maximum brightness. The process also enhances energy efficiency by 22 percent compared to that of the same brightness.
Apparently LG Display’s third-generation 77-inch 4K OLED TV panel, using Meta technology, has a total of 42.4 billion micro lenses, approximately 5,117 micro lenses per pixel.
The Meta booster brightness-enhancing algorithm, improves both screen brightness and colour by analysing and tweaking brightness in real time.
LG Display plans to apply Meta technology to its 55-, 65-, 77-inch 4K and 77-, 88-inch 8K OLED TV panels, ultimately moving all OLED production to the new design.
