Genelec will unveil a new Piano Black version of its flagship 8381 Adaptive Point Source floor-stander at this year’s HIGH END Munich show. The brand, known globally for its active monitoring systems used in top-tier recording studios, first launched the 8381 in 2023 during its 45th anniversary year. The speaker has since established itself as a milestone design: a reference-grade, five-way, floor-standing loudspeaker that merges vast headroom, low-frequency authority, and pinpoint imaging.
The deep, gloss-black exterior transforms the 8381 into a visually arresting centrepiece, equal parts sculpture and sound machine. Adding to this premium presentation is a bespoke, engraved power amplifier unit, designed specifically for floor mounting. Optimised not only for performance but also for integration into modern interiors, this amplifier hints at Genelec’s evolving attention to luxury home audio.
At the heart of the 8381’s design is not so much a loudspeaker, as an adaptive acoustic system. The 8381 brings together decades of acoustic innovation from Genelec’s professional range, including DSP-based room calibration and coaxial driver engineering, and repackages them for discerning home listeners.
Powering this sonic engine is a staggering 5,700 watts of onboard amplification, delivering up to 126 dB SPL, the highest ever achieved by a point source design. At the core is Genelec’s Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC) driver, surrounded by a quartet of 5-inch dome midrange transducers and a forward-facing 15-inch woofer. This configuration is said to provide an ultra-stable soundfield, razor-sharp imaging, and tight, tonally rich midrange.
To anchor the performance in the lowest octaves, two 15-inch woofers mounted within the base of the cabinet employ Genelec’s LF adaptive technology, which maintains a flat, uncoloured low-end response even in acoustically complex rooms. Reflections and standing waves are mitigated, resulting in a presentation that is as clean and revealing in the bass as it is in the treble, says the brand.
The appearance of the Piano Black 8381 at HIGH END Munich (May 15–18, Atrium 4.2, F20) is no coincidence. The show has become Europe’s key stage for showcasing next-generation high-end audio innovation, and Genelec’s presence this year underscores its increasingly confident push into the audiophile space.
Also on exhibition will be Genelec’s 8341 and 8361 models from The Ones series, compact three-way coaxial speakers beloved for their imaging and room-friendly design. Genelec will be highlighting customisation options, including up to 120 RAL colour finishes for The Ones, making these sophisticated monitors more appealing for design-conscious buyers.
Tomi Hassinen, Genelec’s Home Audio Business Manager, summed up the moment: “The 8381 represents the pinnacle of what Genelec can deliver in a home environment. It offers an entirely uncompromised experience, visually stunning, sonically transparent, and remarkably adaptable. Munich is the perfect venue to showcase just how far we’ve come.”
