Freely, the streaming TV platform backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, is set to roll out on standalone streaming devices later this year, marking a significant expansion of its reach beyond built-in smart TVs. The move aims to bring the full Freely experience to even more UK households, without the need to upgrade their screens.
Following its launch on new smart TVs in April 2024, the addition of ‘plug-in and stream’ hardware dramatically widens Freely’s footprint. The new gadgets, developed in partnership with entertainment technology firm Netgem, will take the form of a compact (and affordable) streaming puck, able to connect via Wi-Fi and HDMI, instantly bringing live and on demand TV from the UK’s leading broadcasters to any compatible screen.
The development comes at a time of growing regulatory focus on the future of Public Service Media. Ofcom’s recent PSM review called for clearer delivery plans for UK broadcast content in the streaming era. Freely’s device strategy aligns with that vision, offering a straightforward, cost-effective solution to ensure that streamed Public Service Broadcast (PSB) content remains universally accessible.
Everyone TV, the industry-backed organisation behind Freely, says the new streaming puck offers the same interface and feature set currently available on Freely-enabled smart TVs. That includes seamless access to over 40 live channels and a broad range of free on-demand content from BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5, U, Watch Free UK and PBS America.
Users will be able to browse using an intuitive mini-guide, move between live and on demand TV, pause and restart live broadcasts, and build a personalised watchlist using the ‘My List’ feature. A seven-day forward-and-back EPG is also included, with regular over-the-air software updates expected to maintain and enhance the user experience.
The streaming device requires only a Wi-Fi connection - no satellite dish or aerial, and, crucially, comes with no monthly subscription charges.
French digital entertainment specialist Netgem has been confirmed as the first hardware partner for Freely’s streaming initiative. Its small-form device has been purpose-built to deliver a smooth experience for users wanting to upgrade their TV without investing in a new panel. As well as full Freely integration, it will provide access to other global and local streaming apps, creating a hybrid entertainment hub in a single, affordable product.
Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, said: “Freely was created to make free TV work for everyone. Expanding to ‘plug-in and stream’ devices is an important and natural next step to ensure even more homes can enjoy the full Freely experience without the need for a TV upgrade or paid subscription.”
Sylvain Thevenot, Managing Director of Netgem U.K., added: “This innovation represents a game-changer for viewers who seek a streamlined TV and entertainment experience delivered over Wi-Fi. It breathes a second life into all TV sets at an affordable price.”
The Freely plug-in puck will be available in selected retail outlets later this year. More details, including pricing, availability, additional features and wider hardware partnerships, will be confirmed closer to launch.
For custom installers, this development presents a new entry point for clients seeking a simplified free-to-view offering across secondary screens or older TVs, particularly in areas where aerial infrastructure is limited.
