A high-end audio system tailored for the unique characteristics of electric vehicles (EVs) is a key attraction of the new Kia EV9 luxury SUV. Developed by Meridian Audio, the system combines cutting-edge Digital Signal Processing technologies with a 14-speaker system, for a heightened sense of immersion.
Meridian's engineers, renowned for innovating in the audio industry, faced the unique challenge of navigating the intricate acoustic landscape within an electric vehicle.
Unlike traditional combustion engine vehicles, EVs pose complexities in noise sources and frequency profiles due to higher-frequency background noise. To address this, Meridian shifted its focus from hardware to software, deploying proprietary DSP algorithms to manage the acoustic environment.
Meridian RE-Q was used to optimise the audio system to the precise acoustics of the vehicle cabin. Meanwhile, Meridian Horizon, an upmixing technology, provides a seamless surround sound experience, adapting to the preferences and activities of the vehicle occupants.
Meridian lntelli-Q Data-Driven Equalisation responds dynamically to changes in the in-car acoustic environment, ensuring an optimal audio playback experience.
In a strategic move to elevate bass performance, Meridian selected an open-air connected subwoofer (OCS) for the EV9. This innovation eliminates the need for a large box enclosure, addressing issues like resonances and rattles. The promise is fast, precise, and deep bass for all seating positions.
Byungchul Cho, Kia Corporation’s Head of Product Planning, emphasised the importance of Meridian's contribution to the interior's high-end luxury design: "Our goal is to add a very special experience for Kia customers, and this includes Meridian’s revered sound quality, with its added sense of accuracy and space and an elaborate yet refined branded speaker grille design.”
The Kia EV9 is slated for release in 2024 across Europe, Asia, and the US.
