French audio specialist Elipson has announced a significant upgrade to its spherical Planet L speaker, in the form of the Planet L Performance.

At first glance, the Planet L Performance may look nearly identical to its predecessor, but under the hood there’s a world of difference. Elipson has redesigned components to elevate sound quality. Maintaining the same spherical, bass-reflex enclosure, this iteration boasts a deeper and more controlled bass performance, and a significantly expanded soundstage.

One key upgrade comes in power handling. The original Planet L had an RMS power output of 60 watts, whereas the Planet L Performance bumps this to 100w, for greater dynamics.

It also sports a new 6.5-inch bass-midrange driver. A cellulose pulp membrane, with a damping treatment, is said to allows for a smoother and more natural midrange while ensuring tighter, more controlled bass reproduction.

Additionally, the incorporation of Dual Asymmetric Rubber technology manages suspension control, enabling a pistonic effect that manages controls distortion at high output levels. A new Kapton reel support also enhances cooling efficiency, making the speaker more resistant to thermal buildup and performance degradation under sustained loads.

The Planet L Performance also benefits from a newly designed 1-inch silk-treated dome tweeter, equipped with a horn cone and neodymium magnet for an extended and linear high-frequency response. This results in more refined treble reproduction, with enhanced detail and airiness in the upper frequencies, says the company.

Elipson has placed a strong emphasis on signal purity by integrating a high-end 18 dB/octave crossover featuring premium-grade components, including MKP series polypropylene capacitors, precision metal oxide resistors, and low-resistance inductors. This ensures an optimally balanced sound signature with improved transient response and minimal signal degradation. Signal transmission is enhanced with 2.25 mm OFC (Oxygen-Free Copper) wiring, to reduce resistance and maximize electrical conductivity.

These improvements in the Planet L Performance represent a significant leap over the original Planet L.

The Planet L Performance is available in Glossy, Matte, and Gold finishes. Buyers can even choose between silver-plated or gold-plated terminals. Typical applications for this premium lifestyle speaker would be stylish listening rooms, high-end home Hi-Fi setups, or media rooms.

Integrators should note that the new model is compatible with all Planet L accessories, including brackets, stands and ceiling suspension.

The Planet L Performance speakers sells for £1,200.
