Dolby Laboratories has announced Dolby Vision 2, an upgrade of its HDR picture technology designed to take advantage of modern TV capabilities, and expand creative options for content makers.

Dolby Vision has been a benchmark for HDR picture quality for more than a decade, widely adopted by TV manufacturers, studios, and streaming platforms. Dolby Vision 2 builds on this with a redesigned image engine and advanced optimisation tools. The system is intended to deliver higher performance on today’s brighter, more colour-capable displays, while also providing new tools for film-makers, broadcasters, and games developers.

John Couling, Senior Vice President, Entertainment at Dolby Laboratories, said: “Dolby Vision 2 redefines how we think of Dolby Vision to unleash the full capabilities of modern TVs while giving artists unprecedented opportunities to push their creative boundaries further than ever before.”

At the heart of Dolby Vision 2 is a new image engine, paired with Dolby’s existing content ecosystem of films, series, live sport, and gaming titles. Dolby says this will enable content to look more accurate and more immersive across a range of screen sizes.

The system introduces Content Intelligence, an adaptive framework that automatically optimises image performance for different content types and viewing environments. This includes Precision Black, said to improve clarity in dark scenes without undermining creative intent; Light Sense, which uses ambient light detection and reference lighting data to refine brightness and contrast dynamically., and Sports and Gaming Optimisation, which applies adjustments such as white point calibration and motion control specifically tuned for fast-moving content.

Dolby Vision 2 also brings new tone-mapping techniques to leverage high brightness and wide colour gamut displays, using bi-directional processing to deliver sharper contrast and more saturated colours.

Beyond HDR, Dolby has also announced Authentic Motion, a creative-driven motion control tool that can be applied on a shot-by-shot basis to enhance cinematic fluidity and reduce unwanted judder

Two product tiers will be available to TV makers. Dolby Vision 2 Max is aimed at flagship displays, with full premium feature support, while Dolby Vision 2, delivers the core improvements to mainstream televisions.

Hisense has been announced as the first TV manufacturer to launch Dolby Vision 2 support, beginning with its upcoming RGB-MiniLED models powered by the MediaTek Pentonic 800 chip featuring MiraVision Pro. Availability details will follow later this year.

Sonny Ming, GM of Hisense TV Product Marketing, said: “Dolby Vision 2 jointly with Hisense RGB-MiniLED Technology can not only deliver a dramatically astonishing picture, but also increase the potential of TVs with ultra-wide colour and ultra-high brightness.”

In addition, CANAL+ has confirmed that it will begin delivering content mastered in Dolby Vision 2 across its range of programming, including live sport

Stéphane Baumier, CTO of CANAL+, said: “With the launch of Dolby Vision 2, across movies, series, and live sports, that experience reaches breathtaking new heights.”

Dolby Vision 2 will be rolled out to further manufacturers and content partners over the coming year.
