KEF has unveiled the latest evolution of its best-selling KHT home theatre speaker system. Based on the iconic egg enclosure popularized by the original KEF KHT2005 and KHT3005 systems, the E305 satellites utilise a new 4.5-inch Uni-Q driver derived from the brand's Q300 bookshelf speakers, and employ construction techniques lifted from the LS50 mini monitor; the promise is that this lifestyle package has real hi-fi chops.

The system should appeal to installers looking for a quick-to-install 5.1 solution with a minimal footprint. Available in either black or white, the speakers come with a unique matt finish. Helpfully, the die-cast aluminium bases of the five satellites rotate to form wall brackets if required. Alternatively, KEF supplies swan neck speaker stands. Additional enclosures can be purchased should you want to upgrade to a 7.1 configuration; the subwoofer however is only available as part of the base system.

Although small, the satellites pack a lot of technology. The midrange drivers use a diffraction-free Z-flex surround, allied to an aluminium cone, while the tweeter features a proprietary tangerine waveguide for a wider stereo sweet spot. The sub is a closed box design with a downward firing 8-inch driver. Setup is minimal. On the matching AVR, installers need only set levels to 0dB, assign speakers to Small and choose 90Hz as the crossover.

The system will retail for £900, when it launches in May.
