Karma-AV is now offering the new modular XPA-DR Series platform from Emotiva. The Emotiva’s DR Series’ XPA-DR1 mono, XPA-DR2 two-channel and XPA-DR3 three-channel models use up to three pairs of Differential Reference Amplifier Modules, fed by a 3kW switch mode power supply, within a heavy-duty chassis.

The DR modules are deployed in pairs to provide each channel with a  balanced low-noise signal path from differential input to complementary fully-discrete analogue Class A/B output stages. Working in unison they deliver high power with natural dynamics, vivid resolution and absolute control.

Output stages use Emotiva’s Soft-Switch Class H power supply topology, allowing each to operate on a lower supply voltage at low power levels in order to minimise power consumption, and to switch instantly to a higher voltage rail when required. This operation is continuous and in real time, allowing greater overall efficiency, cooler operation, extended component life, reduced power consumption, and increased reliability.

The modular XPA-DR platform employs Emotiva’s high-current 3kW Switch-Mode Power Supply (SMPS), which offers the dynamic attributes of a classic transformer-based supply with none of the drawbacks. By generating large reserves of fully regulated continuous and dynamic power from a lighter and more efficient design, the SMPS ensures optimum performance under a wider range of load conditions.

The amplifiers’ front panel blue LED display and protection system are designed to work with the maximum number of channels so need not be updated with the addition of channels. Unoccupied rear panel slots are covered with protective cover panels (XPA-DR1 for instance is configured with a pair of Differential Reference Modules and up to two further module pairs can be added).

Karma-AV suggests combining Emotiva’s ‘Differential Reference’ powertrain with the brand’s XSP-1 balanced preamplifier (£1,419) to create an audiophile-grade amplification and control system. Sounds like a good idea to us.
