The name may not be familiar to either UK dealers or consumers, but new loudspeaker brand GoldenEar Technology plans on making a noise this autumn with an impressively diverse range of kit. The company, which launched in the US last year, has arrived brandishing stereo floorstanders, unobtrusive multichannel home cinema packages and specialised surround and subwoofer systems. There would appear to be a solution for every sonic requirement in its launch portfolio.
While the GoldenEar Technology name is new, the brains behind it have a distinguished track record. Company founders Sandy Gross and Don Givogue were co-founders of Definitive Technology. Prior to that Gross launched Polk Audio. Both US brands have enviable reputations in the industry.
Gross said he was motivated to form GoldenEar Technology, after retiring from Definitive, because he wanted "to bring back the combination of entrepreneurial spirit and passion for incredible sound which has always driven this business." The brand's USP appears to be proprietary high-performance driver technology, coupled with competitive price points. Speaking back at the company's Stateside launch, he said that the "initial product offering will be extremely focused and highly targeted to appeal to discerning buyers who are looking for something more exciting and clearly more desirable than homogenised, mass-market products." Distribution in the UK is via Karma-av.
Tasked with creating a halo effect around the marque are the Triton floor-towers. Available as either the (RRP £3,000 a pair) Triton Two or smaller (RRP £2,000 a pair) Triton Three, both models feature integrated DSP controlled sub-bass systems, comprising active long-throw bass drivers coupled with side-mounted radiators, and the brands 'signature' 4.5-inch MVPP mid-range driver and High Velocity Folded Ribbon (HVFR) tweeter.
Rather less imposing are the compact, pyramid-shaped (RRP £800) Aon 2 and (RRP £1,000) Aon 3 shelf/stand monitors, which feature 6- and 7-inch iterations of the Triton MVPP driver, plus a ribbon tweeter sandwiched by two side-mounted bass radiators.
There's also the ultra-slim SuperSat satellite/centre channel series, which feature the GoldenEar MVPP midrange and HVFR tweeters in D'Appolito configurations, voice-matched with both Triton and Aon models. The SuperSat 50/50C, with piano black aluminium finish, is intended for on-wall/book shelf installation, using either threaded inserts, keyhole mounts or an adjustable cradle (alternatively you can opt for optional floor and table/shelf stands). They include planar bass radiators on either side of the mid-range drivers. The smaller SuperSat 3/3C speakers have a non-resonant polymer finish. The 3 model is supplied with a stand for shelf mounting, while the 3C has an adjustable table-top cradle.
When it comes to all-in-one systems, GoldenEar Technology has the (RRP £2,750) SuperCinema 3 and SuperCinema 50 sat/sub systems (pictured above); these packages include an array of SuperSat satellites coupled to the GoldenEar (£550) ForceField 3 and (£750) ForceField 4 active subwoofers. The latter appears to be a particularly potent beast, incorporating the same 1200w amp developed for the Triton Two. It drives a front-mounted high-power ultra-long-throw 10-inch sub-bass driver coupled to a downward-firing radiator. The smaller model utilises a 1000w amp, and has an 8-inch driver. Adding some install versatility is an optional wireless kit for the subs.
