What tops your hit list when it comes to specifying a new home cinema? Is it the latest 4K projector or an all singing, all dancing AV receiver? Perhaps it should be something rather more fundamental, like dedicated seating? Cinema technology may have evolved beyond all recognition over the past century, but one component of the cinema experience remains a staple - the seating. If you want to ensure comfort for the two or more hours of the average blockbuster movie then you need to consider specialist cinema seats. The best tech in the world won't impress if the viewer just can't relax.
One company which has been at the forefront of the UK home cinema seating market is Signature; it's been selling its popular classic range for over four years now. The original Signature seat was a single which came in black, cream and brown, but as from this month a new colour, 'anthracite', has been added to the line up. These seats offer a perfect posture position and have a luxury feel; the arms boast built in cup holders, that all important place to put your beverage and popcorn.
The seat has a full electric incliner with the back, seat and footrest moving in synergy. The retail price per seat is £1,435, however if you want to configure a curve to a row of seats you can purchase a wedge for £288. For those that want to get a little more cosy, then Signature also offers the Love Seat (pictured above), which is a sofa version of the single seat. Available in the same four colours as the single seat, the Love Seat retails for £2,798.
Atlantik AV, based in Lancashire, distributes the Signature range of seats exclusively in the UK. MD Glenn Kelly told Inside CI that interest in dedicated theatre seating is growing. "We've seen a considerable rise in the home seating cinema market in the UK over the last six months, " he explains, "which is why we took the decision to expand our range with the new anthracite colour. A vast number of rooms are using greys and blacks and it made sense to offer an option that would fit that particular interior design. "
With cinema rooms now coming in many shapes and forms, Signature has also introduced the Club Seat, designed with smaller cinemas and games rooms in mind. The foot print of the Club has been considerably reduced and comes in manual form only; this particular design is only available in black leather, and retails for £818. Signature tells us that all seats are held in stock for rapid delivery. The brand also offers a bespoke colour option service and, for an extra cost, can supply just about any colour of hide on the market. However it says there will be a lead time of 12 weeks if you require this bespoke service.
Atlantik AV's Kelly puts Signature's growing popularity down to its combination of competitive price and high quality finish - "that and the fact we have three leather colour options available from stock in the UK, it gives us a comfortable advantage,'' he quips.
