Amina unleashes huge in-wall transmission line subwoofer, fits standard wall cavities

Invisible loudspeaker specialist Amina has begin shipping its largest in-wall speaker yet. The ALF120, which maintains the company’s ethos of providing custom installers with “near” invisible subwoofer solutions to complement their range of completely invisible in-wall and in-ceiling speakers.

Amina says it designed the ALF120 “to produce deep, loud and fast low frequencies from an ultra slim in wall enclosure” and is suitable for both stereo and multichannel cinema systems.

The ALF120 can be located within a standard wall cavity and fires discretely into the room at floor level. Its stands 1.6m tall and will fit within standard 400mm studwall bays. A slot vent, which measures 315 x 14mm, can be positioned behind a suitable matching slot in the room’s skirting board. The sub's slot vent has a design that allows the orientation of the port to be changed by 90 degrees. This allows for the ALF120 to also be placed flat under sofas, in ceiling soffits, or built into joinery that cannot accommodate the product in an upright position.

The Amina R&D team says it investigated various bass-optimised subwoofer designs that would enable conventional drive units to be incorporated within a very shallow cabinet design. Their research led to the adoption of a transmission line design “which endows the product with exceptionally high efficiency, deep and fast bass response and a narrow slot opening for the pressure waves to enter the room.” Typically transmission line designs are physically unwieldy, but since the ALF120 was destined for in-wall use, the approach was deemed “an ideal solution allowing integrators to take advantage of its enormous acoustic benefits.” It’s also extremely power efficient. Amina suggests that power amplifiers offering just 75W rms (into 4 Ohms) are sufficient to drive the ALF120. This makes it a suitable partner for cool running, low energy amps; ideal if a smaller rack space is required. Suitable amplifiers require bandpass EQ functionality. The Amina technical team say they will provide setup advice to all installers.

The ALF120 comes with a paintable rectangular plate to finish wall, ceiling or cabinetry openings. The sub boasts a frequency response of 26Hz – 120Hz, with in-room sound pressure levels of 110dB and even greater if corner loaded. The ALF120 is currently part of Amina’s 7.1.2 Atmos cinema demo system in Huntingdon.
