Sony is expanding its dominance of the high-end home theatre projection market, with the launch of a third 4K SXRD model, the VPL-VW300ES. Priced at Euro 6,999 (or around £5,500), the projector is its most keenly priced Ultra HD offering yet. It's positioned below the brand's VPL-VW500ES and flagship VPL-VW100ES and will be available from October.

The VPL-VW300ES utilises the same Triluminos colour processing and Digital Reality Creation engines as the VPL-VW500ES, and shares identical optics, 4,096×2,160 resolution support and chassis. Indeed there are only subtle differences between the two models. It loses the dynamic iris and is slightly less bright at 1,500 lumens, but these cutbacks don't' appear to have diminished its 4K prowess. Demonstrations of the projector at IFA 2014 proved extremely impressive.

At the tech show, Sony screened a demo showreel consisting of 2160/60p native 4K filmed at the FIFA World Cup, along with the opening to the TV thriller The Blacklist, also shot natively in 4K, as well as concert footage of Karmin singing 'Acapella' on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The sports material was mesmerizingly smooth, with crisp detail and vibrant colour. Motion handling is governed by the same Motionflow options, and includes a low latency mode for gamers.

The Blacklist showed just how ruthless 4K clarity can be, with hyper-detailed close-ups of star James Spader, surrendering to the FBI. Any concerns that the projector might also surrender black level performance were dispelled with the concert footage, which also emphasized the dynamics of the system. The slight loss of brightness will not be an issue for integrators installing this model in a dedicated theatre environment. The projector employs a 2.06 zoom powered lens with a wide shift range; 3D syncing is achieved via a built-in RF 3D transmitter. Dual HDMI inputs support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2.

"We believe this model will significantly expand the 4K home cinema market," Thomas Issa, product manager for home cinema projectors at Sony Europe told Inside CI, adding "Sony leads the 4K projection market because of our expertise in 4K digital cinema." When asked where the brand goes next with 4K projection technology, Issa was unambiguous: "Laser."
