Sky Q Sony 4K juddering fault: What TVs are affected and how to fix the problem

Sky officially rolled out its eagerly awaited UHD TV service this weekend, after several days of early trials, but it seems not all 4K TV owners were impressed. Reports from Sony 4K TV owners highlight some basic incompatibility between Sony’s recent UHD TV and the Sky 4K UHD service, resulting in frame judder with 4K content.

Sony sets known to be affected by the Sky 4K problem are the X94C, X93C, X91C, X90C, S85C, S80C, X85C, X83C, X80C series (all released during 2015) , and this year’s XD94, XD93, XD85 and SD85 series.

There is speculation that the trouble may be an HDCP handshaking issue between the TV and the Sky Q Silver box. It can take several hours of viewing for the judder problem manifest. It also appears some Sony 4K sets don’t support Sky’s 2160/50 output.

So what’s the fix for the Sony TV Sky 4K problem? Well, according to the Sony Europe, those viewers wishing “to completely remove the video judder (until a software update corrects the issue), then please set the set top box output as HD (1080i or 1080p).” In truth, not the most positive advice for those that have bought a new Sony 4K TV, because, well, it’s a new 4K TV.

Another possible solution to the problem, says Sony, is to cycle the TV In and then Out of Standby mode for approximately five seconds, using the green power button on the remote control. Sky also suggests jumping between input sources on the set.

The Sky website notes: “Sky and Sony are currently working together to investigate this issue. “ The Sony website adds: “Please note that this issue will be resolved via a future software update.”

TV forums have also noted similar problems for viewers of BT’s UHD sports service, but so far there has been no firmware fix issued for this.

Update: Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon. A Sony insider has told Inside CI “We are aware of the issue and it has been fixed internally, we are now working on the release of a software update.”

If indeed it is a HDCP issue then reducing to 1080p won't help as the output is still encrypted at 2.2.

I've worked on the BT UHD solution for the past 3 years but I'm not aware of this issue being raised and I've not managed to find anything referring to it on our bulletin boards. One thing that we have seen that can cause viewing issues are the various "clever" options like auto frame insertion and other motion processing which with the 50p content almost always seem to result in a poorer quality result. I've seen what could be described as juddering with these being used.
