Sage 50 2012 Mobile App review

Not all Inside CI app reviews have to be about funky technology. Applications that help us manage our business affairs more efficiently are also of interest - which is where this free mobile edition of Sage 50 2012 comes in.

We like this app because we know busy Custom Installers, especially smaller companies, don't have time to keep an eye on the books. SAGE 50 Mobile 2012 works on both iPad or iPhone.  We've been looking at the latter, as the full iPad app version has yet to launch.

With this Sage 50 app you can monitor your bank accounts, check which customers owe you money and for how long; you can even produce an invoice on site when you have completed the contract and be ready to email it across to client.

We found that the initial configuration is a little tricky if you have your main Sage 50 accounts held on a server; when we were setting up for the first time it took a dislike to our firewall and virus software. Still, once you are past this small hurdle, a simple log in from your mobile and, Hey Presto, all the information you need for tracking your money and book keeping is in front of you.

The app communicates to the desktop software via an encrypted data feed, handled through a secure gateway operated by Sage. Mobile customers need a Sage "passport" to log in and use the app, but they don't have to own a copy of the desktop software themselves. App users can write some data such as orders and customer details back into the database, but they cannot post transactions into accounts ledgers. These need to be handled by the desktop software user.

As data is starting to move off servers racked in office cupboard to the Cloud, these are interesting times for small businesses who cannot afford the infrastructure of a full remote IT solution. The ideal solution would be to allow you to retrieve all your data, wherever you are in the world without having to log onto remote access.

Overall, this app is a small step forward and shows that the giant in accounts software is focused on listening to its customers. This can only be a good thing.

Sage is currently working on iPad and Android versions  - you can log your interest on the Sage web page.

Pros

Familiar feel if you are familiar with Sage 50, secure and easy way to check all important facts when on site, for example if a customer still owes you money. Sage has great technical support.

Cons

Can be a little tricky to setup with a server - firewalls and virus software won't let data through sometimes.
