The Xbox One is to become the first games console to support Dolby Atmos audio. Microsoft has also confirmed that Dolby Atmos audio will be coming to Windows 10 PC games.

The first titles are due next year, although specifics have yet to be confirmed. The Xbox One announcement coincides with Atmos compatibility landing on the console’s Blu-ray player. Xbox has confirmed that Blu-ray bitstream pass-through, which includes Dolby Atmos support on Xbox One and Xbox One S, is rolling out to Xbox Preview members. This feature enables all Xbox consoles to pass Blu-ray audio data to compatible AV receivers or sound bars.

“At Team Xbox we are all gamers first and bringing Dolby Atmos support to Xbox One and Windows 10 gaming next year will bring you even further inside the action and sound of your favorite titles,” says Mike Ybarra, Xbox’s Head of Platform Engineering. “A big thank you to the team at Dolby for their partnership; we’re excited to share more with the Xbox community next year.”

The move gives the Xbox One platform yet another advantage over rival PlayStation 4, which infamously snubbed the 4K UHD Blu-ray format.

To deliver Atmos audio from an Xbox One console users should first ensure that they have the latest Blu-ray player by checking the ‘Updates’ tab under ‘My Games & Apps’ and then enable ‘Let my receiver decode audio (beta)’ under the ‘Disc & Blu-ray’ settings page.
