Warner Classics has launched the 3D Classical Collection, a Dolby Atmos playlist featuring 35 classical tracks by 26 composers, newly recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir and British conductor Ben Gernon.
Available exclusively through Amazon Music, the 3D Classical Collection was recorded at Studio One at Abbey Road Studios, where it was also mixed in Dolby Atmos.
Currently, the only way to experience the Atmos collection is on the Amazon Echo Studio all-in-one sound system, delivered via Amazon Music HD.
The Echo Studio employs five built-in directional speakers, to create an immersive soundfield. Unlike rival streaming service Tidal, Amazon has not yet made Dolby Atmos available over HDMI from its Fire TV players.
“Our aim has been to ensure that each track has the edge of live performance,” says conductor Ben Gernon, “to create the electrifying sensation of living inside the music.” Gernon, who was mentored by the late Sir Colin Davis, is Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and has also conducted such major orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, LA Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic and Oslo Philharmonic. The London Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1932, is one of the world's finest symphony orchestras, and is admired for its adventurous, forward-looking approach.
The 3D Classical Collection spans four centuries, ranging from Bach, Handel and Vivaldi through Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Verdi to Mahler, Elgar, Ravel, Prokofiev, Holst, Shostakovich and Barber.
“Since the dawn of the music recording industry, the dream has always been to reproduce the classical concert experience as closely as possible,” adds Bertrand Castellani, VP A&R Warner Classics & Erato. “The 3D Classical Collection goes one step further. Each track completely submerges the listener in the orchestral sound experience. What could be more exciting than to step into the midst of the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road, with the young and talented Ben Gernon on the conductor’s podium? This new dimension in sound reproduction opens up creative perspectives that we look forward to exploring in the coming years.”
