Virgin Media has announced a series of Wi-Fi updates which, it says, will improve the wireless experience of its broadband customers.

Dubbed Intelligent WiFi, the technology requires a Hub 3 router and offers channel optimisation, directing devices to less crowded WiFi channels, plus band steering between 2.4GHz or 5GHz f(it cites tests showing that equipment connecting to the 5GHz frequency will see a speed increase of 25 per cent).

According to the broadband supplier, extensive testing has seen its Intelligent WiFi technology has seen speeds improving by up to three times to multiple devices without the aid of a booster. 4K streaming, gaming and net use can be carried out at the same time across multiple devices.
As part of the initiative, Virgin Media has introduced a new Connect app. This allows customers to test the strength of their Wi-Fi from room-to-room and manage connected devices.

Virgin Media will supply boosters to Full House and VIP customers free of charge, if they’re required.

“Intelligent WiFi will allow our customers to make the most of their broadband while also helping to easily overcome any connectivity conundrums around the home,” says Richard Sinclair MBE, Executive Director of Connectivity at Virgin Media. “With families using more devices than ever before, it’s vital they can all be online whenever needed. Whether it’s streaming UHD movies on Netflix, playing the latest games online or video conferencing, Intelligent WiFi has your back.”
