Synology took the wraps off a new generation of storage and network solutions at its annual symposium, Synology 2019, held recently in London. Highlights included a new version of the company’s NAS Operating System DiskStation Manager 7.0 (DSM 7.0), and a new hardware Unified Controller UC300, the first iSCSI dedicated server with dual-active controller.

The company also previewed its long promised Mesh Router MR2200ac, together with Synology Router Manager 1.2 (SRM 1.2). Inside CI dropped in to take a closer look, and was wowed by the range and versatility of the offerings available from the brand.

A specialist in NAS and IP surveillance solutions, Synology has made a watchword of reliability, which will be music to the ears of system integrators. The company is now increasingly focussed on machine learning, and is looking to introduce an all-inclusive solution that covers storage, off-site backup, network communication, and cloud services.

The DSM 7.0 OS features an improved user experience, including interactive guidance to system status and controls. A big new feature is a rapid disk reconstruction technology. Disk failure prediction, powered by machine learning, minimises risk of data loss in the event of RAID degradation. Working on a big project? No problem. Synology’s CMS 2.0 (Central Management System 2.0) can manage up to 10,000 NAS devices.

The MR2200ac claims to be the world’s first WPA3-certified mesh router. It’s equipped with Synology Router Manager 1.2 (SRM 1.2), and has extended Wi-Fi coverage for a faster, more reliable Internet connection.

Synology also announced File Streaming capabilities in Synology Drive, integration with Alexa, Siri and Google voice assistants, and Surveillance Station DVA (Deep Video Analytics).
