Linn has unveiled a new network music player, the Selekt DSM, available as either a source component or standalone audio system. This latest addition to its DSM line boasts a new tactile design, and employs a host of audio enhancing technologies, including its proprietary space optimisation. Space Optimisation uses Linn’s own digital signal processing to remove the physical influence of the listening room.

Giving the Selekt DSM an iconic look is an intricate LED dial and configurable “piano-key” smart fascia buttons. The latter can be programmed for services or even tracks.

A proximity sensor activates the dial when it’s approached. The player features a crisp black and white OLED track display.

Linn says the new Selekt DSM has been designed to bring some of the physicality of music playback, lost in the shift to streaming. “We love the clarity of digital music, but we also love the tactility of physical records,” says Gilad Tiefenbrun, Linn Managing Director. “It’s easy to feel we’ve lost touch with the immersive experience of playing a vinyl record... the LP selection, the lift-lower, the anticipation during those first pops and clicks, and that playing music requires only a swipe and a tap. Selekt DSM revolutionises our physical interaction with digital music; every aspect is precision engineered for a tactile and enriched listening experience.”

The Selekt DSM is available in a number of iterations, thanks to a modular design using different feature cartridges. In its base configuration, it’s a source component that can be partnered with any separates system. Alternatively it can include an integrated amplifier, wherein it just needs speakers. In addition to streaming, the Selekt DSM’s on-board pre-amplifier enables a multitude of sources to be connected, including a turntable.

It’s also available with or without the brand’s high-performance Katalyst DAC architecture.

A multichannel home theatre version, with HDMI input board and 5.1 Dolby Digital decoding, will follow in 2019.

Briefing

Shoot Out

Inside CI was invited to preview the Selekt DSM player. Available in black finish, the unit is beautifully designed, and hand-built to order. It features machined vents across the sleeve, has chrome feet, and sports a plaque on the underside documenting its unique origin.

Audio demos, including a shoot-out with rivals (pictured), were highly impressive in all configurations, with the player presenting a soundstage of immense clarity and musicality.

The base player retails for £4,000. With integrated power amp, it sells for £5,250. The Selekt DSM with Katalyst sells for £5,500 and the integrated amp version with Katalyst is priced at £6,750.

The Selekt DSM will be available through Linn’s custom install network after an exclusivity period ends.

In related news, Linn has announced that every Linn network music player will now come as standard with digital and analogue inputs, enabling them to be partnered with a wide variety of sources, including TVs and turntables.
