The Star Wars franchise has lost none of its appeal. The home entertainment release of Episode VII The Force Awakens has set a new record for Blu-ray and DVD sales in the UK. Figures released by BASE (the British Association for Screen Entertainment), reveal that 1,247,622 discs were sold during its first week of release.

This smashes the previous best-seller, Spectre, which shifted 940,000 Spectre over the same period. The good news for CI, is that Blu-ray sales alone topped 531,949 copies. This officially makes the disc the UK’s fastest selling Blu-ray disc. It also makes it the title the tenth best selling UK title, after just one week.

The UK physical disc market is currently looking very buoyant. According to BASE, the market is up by 35 per in the first quarter. Industry figures confirm that Blu-ray sales have jumped 17.1 per cent YOY. Dean Pappadakis, Commercial Director, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, commented: “We’re overwhelmed by the week one performance of Star Wars The Force Awakens across all its formats. It’s one of the most enduring franchises and set to become one of the best-selling titles ever.”

'The huge leap in Blu-ray consumption shows that consumers absolutely value the content and are willing to pay a premium price for the best quality viewing experience at home' adds Liz Bales, chief executive of BASE.

Currently, Disney has yet to throw its support behind 4K Ulltra HD Blu-ray.
