Sony has announced a new 55-inch 4K monitor, the PVM-X550, at NAB 2016. The quad-view Trimaster EL is principally aimed at 4K film and TV production as well as live 4K broadcasts. The wall-mountable screen offers customizable display settings across four individual views, including contrast, colour space, colour temperature and Electro-Optical Transfer Function (EOTF).

As 4K HDR gains traction there’s an increasing new for large format displays in the workflow, for cameramen, directors and producers evaluating video in the field. This panel can be used alongside the BVM-X300, a 30-inch 4K OLED reference monitor, often used to benchmark high-end consumer displays. It marks an important step in the standardisation of 4K production.

The PVM-X550 supports HDR through various EOTF modes for cinematography and broadcast, such as S-Log3, SMPTE ST.2084 and Hybrid Log-Gamma.  It also supports industry standard colour spaces including BT.2020 for UHD. Connectivity includes 3G-SDI,HD-SDI (Single Link/Dual Link) and HDMI.

“Professional monitors are essential for 4K productions in the field and aid creators in visual storytelling”, says Daniel Dubreuil, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Sony Professional Solutions Europe. “With the PVM-X550 cameramen, directors and producers now have the capability to choose individual settings for each of the four displays to achieve their desired outcome. With this range of displays, Sony is putting image quality and dependability at the front of its agenda, giving professionals the confidence to count on excellent, reliable images for the longest time possible.”

The screen will be available in the Summer.
