Panasonic has become the first CE brand to offer two 4K Blu-ray players. The new DMP-UB700 has made its debut at the IFA tech show in Berlin, and is expected to go on sale later this year. The new model will be significantly cheaper than the original DMP-UB900, most likely priced at £399.

The good news is there's no sacrifice in video performance. Key differences include a new power supply and less esoteric audio components, plus a more basic remote control. The DMP-UB700 features the same 4K High-Precision chroma processor, and offers 4K content streaming services from Netflix and Amazon Video. There's also 4K Direct Chroma up-scaling function for 2K content.

Connections include twin HDMI outputs. Naturally the deck supports HDR(10) and BT.2020. While some of the audiophile grade components are gone, the player is still compatible with Hi-Res Audio music files, including DSD (5.6 MHz/2.8 MHz), FLAC and ALAC, and offers Digital Tube Sound presets with 96kHz/192kHz up-sampling. The player is also certified Ultra HD Premium.

Sony also moved behind the format, offering a first look at its 4K UHD Blu-ray proposition (pictured below). There was no launch information, but as expected the design reflects that seen on the recently released UHP-H1 Blu-ray deck. The chassis at IFA was non-functioning, with 4K images above it sourced from a media player.
