Sky is stepping up the number of movies available in 4k HDR on its Sky Q platform, adding upwards of 40 films in the format this Christmas, including Bad Boys for Life, Dolittle,  Emma, Little Women, Le Mans 66, the entire Harry Potter catalogue and the Back to the Future trilogy..

Sky originals to be made available in HDR this december include Tin Star: Liverpool, Gangs of London and Chernobyl.

There are also changes to the UI. The platform is introducing an HDR icon and improving voice search. Personalised recommendations can be had be asking “What should I watch” or “Show me great TV.”

The system is also getting more resilient. When bad weather prevents a satellite signal, users will still be able to view recordings, watch VoD and stream apps. However, hopes that Sky would upgrade its mini boxes to 4k were dashed. No new hardware announcements were made during its media briefing, although it has confirmed that it is looking at adding HDR to select 1080p sports coverage going forward.

The platform is also making more use of ‘favourited’ TV channels, introducing a new personalised What’s On Now and Next rail on the home page, to save viewers scrolling through the EPG.

Sky says it remains committed to Dolby Atmos audio, and says that it continues to look at ways to improve the performance of its Soundbox speaker, produced in collaboration with Devialet. Could an immersive audio firmware upgrade be on the cards?
