Sky is now offering Dolby Atmos audio with 4K UHD movies. Until recently the broadcaster has used the 3D audio format for select live sports, but after a trial on Sky One it’s now extended the audio system to its Sky Q cinema platform.

Films with Dolby Atmos audio include the Scarlett Johansson actioner Ghost In The Shell, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Spider-Man 2 & 3, Star Trek Beyond, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out Of The Shadows and XXX: Return of Xander Cage. Dolby Atmos is also available on the new Sky Atlantic show Britannia. In Sky Store, Transformers The Last Knight is also available in the sound format.

Obviously, it will take some considerable time for Sky’s catalogue to offer a comparable number of titles to Blu-ray, but this is a significant upgrade in the quality of AV available from the broadcaster. In fact, the only significant difference between 4K Blu-ray and the Sky Q UHD proposition is now HDR - and that’s widely expected to launch on Sky this year.

It remains to be seen just how fast Dolby Atmos is adopted across other Sky channels and content strands, but it seems like the immersive audio floodgates have just opened.
