Move over Netflix, a new player has entered the home cinema streaming market.

Theatrical specialist Showcase Cinemas has launched a new streaming service for mobile devices called Showcase at home. There’s currently no dedicated TV player for the service, although apps do support Chromecast and Airplay.

This new video-on-demand service is designed to complement and expand upon Showcase Cinemas’ theatrical Event Cinema, Flashback and Spotlight programming, as well as the company’s theatrical distribution business.

The service offers a handpicked selection of films and event programming for fans, alongside new digital releases, catalogue classics, indie releases and event cinema productions, such as theatre, musicals, stand-up comedy, exhibitions and concert films.

Supporting distributors include Paramount, Lions Gate, Altitude, Signature, Vertigo and Verve, along with specialist programming from companies such as Eagle Rock, Seventh Art, Liberator, and All the Anime.

Showcase at Home has launched with the release of Becoming Rocky: The Birth of a Classic, a documentary about the creation of the Academy Award winning Rocky, narrated by Sylvester Stallone. Other new releases will include the documentary Repeat Attenders about musicals super fans, and Dogwoof’s The Australian Dream.

Also available are Event Cinema titles, including Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away and The Rolling Stones: Ole Ole Ole A Journey Through Latin America

New theatrical releases on the platform include The Personal History of David Copperfield, Days of the Bagnold Summer, and The Biggest Little Farm.

Catalogue offerings include Monty Python: Life of Brian, A Quiet Place, There Will Be Blood, and Grease. Anime is represented by landmark titles such as Your Name, Perfect Blue and Promare.

The Australian Dream, A Rainy Day in New York, Peanut Butter Falcon, and John & Yoko: Above Us Only Sky fly the flag for documentaries and independent releases.

“The forced temporary closure of our cinemas obviously been a difficult period, but one positive is that it’s allowed us to develop and launch this platform,” says Showcase Cinema’s James Dobbin. “The big screen will always be our first priority but it’s very exciting to have a streaming platform that will give our audiences another chance to watch shows they missed at our cinemas, and also encourage them to try content they might not usually choose for their night out. As well as creating a new revenue stream, we see the platform as a marketing tool to increase the frequency of cinema-going of our existing customers as well as bringing in new ones.”

Since 2016, the distribution arm of Showcase has released over 70 films and events, specialising in anime, pre-school, sports documentaries, and e-Sports. In 2019, Dragon Ball Super: Broly became its first film to gross over £1m at the UK and Irish Box Office. The League of Legends eSports Final from Paris was broadcast to 150 cinemas in 15 territories in collaboration with Piece of Magic last November.

“Showcase at home adds even more scope to our exhibitor / distributor model”, says Dobbin. “It’s amazing how it immediately creates a much bigger conversation so we’re really looking forward to the opportunities it will bring.”

Rentals are available from £3.49 for HD. For more visit Showcase at Home here.
