Dolby has partnered with the Tate and National Museums Liverpool to unveil to UK fans the new immersive Dolby Atmos mix of The Beatles legendary album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The multichannel redux has been masterminded by producer Giles Martin (pictured above) at Abbey Road (where the original was recorded), utilising the four track master tapes from the original studio sessions to produce 22 objects for the Atmos mix. The album will be played back in a dedicated Dolby Atmos listening space.

A free to attend event, tickets for the show sold out fast. “I think they all went in about four minutes,” Martin told Inside CI.

The Sgt. Pepper’s Dolby Atmos mix was previously heard during an album listening event, held at 22 cinemas across North America to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album, where the Dolby Atmos version was heard for the first time. It was played in full darkness, to heighten the sense of immersion.

"The clarity of the remix reveals the astonishing intricacy of the album. It’s like hearing the album again for the first time..."

enjoyed an early preview of the Atmos iteration of Sgt. Pepper’s at a listening session in a Dolby Atmos mixing suite at Abbey Road.

Offering wraparound placement, with inventive use of all channels, including the .1 -”There isn’t a lot of deep bass on the original recordings, but we’ve placed elements of the kick drum, elements of the bass” explains Martin), it’s like hearing the album again for the first time.

The clarity of the remix reveals the astonishing intricacy of the album. "It was beautifully recorded," says Martin.

Literally surrounded by the band, it’s difficult to imagine the work was originally mixed and released in a mono format. “The subsequent stereo release was almost a throwaway,” confides the producer.

The Dolby Atmos remix took three weeks to complete.

There are currently no plans to release the Dolby Atmos mix of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on Blu-ray. However the immersive version of the album is available on Amazon Music HD, although the only device which can currently play it is the Echo Studio smart speaker.

The Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: The Immersive Experience runs at the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Building, Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, between December 19 and January 9.
