Inside CI recently dropped in to JVC's UK's London HQ to check out its new screening facilities. The brand refurbished its dedicated light-controlled theatre prior to the arrival of its 4K pixel-shifting D-ILA range. Fed by the brand's new high resolution DLA-X70R projector and using an Artcoustic and Onkyo sound system the room certainly looks and sounds fantastic. What particularly caught our eye was the screen that JVC has chosen to deploy in the room.
It's the Screen Excellence TAM 2-L, which offers a constant height with motorized lateral masks to give a 160-inch base width.
As we see a gradual move to 4K resolution displays, the screen choice for high-end theatres becomes increasingly important, if all that extra detail that the projectors are capable of is to be fully appreciated.
Screen Excellence says that its proprietary Enlightor 4K projection surface is the only acoustically transparent surface fully compatible with 4K projection, which doesn't limit its resolution. "It's totally moiré free at any resolution." Patrice Congard, the CEO of Screen Excellence insists that "traditional perforated vinyl screens or other less exacting woven screen materials" just can't match it.
Steven Carter, JVC's product specialist manager, told Inside CI that he's delighted with the performance of the screen, both with Full HD 2D and 3D source material. So much so that the TAM 2-L is now a permanent part of the brand's home cinema demonstration suite.
